First Day of Real Food Since My 1st Fill
WAgal replied to MamaMichelle's topic in Gastric Band Support & Discussion
Ohhhh Michelle, I'm sorry... thanks for your experience. I feel kinda bad for you! It's great that you have self control because I wouldn't be able to do what you are doing... I needed that restriction! Now I'm wondering how the others are doing. 3 of us got the 1.7cc fill and you were one of the 1.6cc fill, who was the other one? I'm curious to know. Ladies from our fill group if you can post something about your fill... working for you or not? That's why I didn't obey the 3 day waiting Dr. Romero advised. I don't have the luxury to fly down again immediately to do an unfill or adjustment right now. I'd have to drive, well not too far for me to Arlington but then I'd spend more money to do the adjustment. When we got to the hotel on Friday night (Hyatt), I immediately searched for the fill afer care... they do vary... but I distinctly read that there was only a one day back to fluid then mush the following day... and if you felt good on the third day and no problem then you were back to eating regularly as a bandster. It would have defeated the purpose of staying the few extra nights to see if the fill was correct. Sorry... I do tend to make my decisions based on forehand knowledge... this was something I was certain about. I have read that sometimes it takes a few days for it to kick in...although I don't know how or can't remember the explanation... I'd call Dr. Romero and find out if he has anything to offer as far as an explanation. I'm sure he must have something to tell you that's helpful! At the least, and I know it's inconvenient, you can drive there.. Best wishes in whatever you decide Michelle! Hanna -

Diana, You are welcome... I'm just so glad that it was so easy Have fun... the weather was great except for me and my daughter were feeling sick. Will you be staying at the Lucerna? They have the great package they are offering now at OCC... but if you need help with 4 star hotels at SD, then I priceline. That's what the gals and I did. Again scary to do online (booking hotels) for the first time, but Linda was impressed and claims she'll be doing it again. I've been doing it since 2003. Have a happy and safe trip and shop only in the daytime at TJ. Blessings, Hanna -

Hi Donna! Thanks for the welcome back.. it snowed again while we were gone?! Where is our warm weather??? Oh well.. I am glad to be home... I missed my little ones... Zulma brought her 3 year old and it made me miss mine! I'm so glad to hear your fill went well like ours. I understand... I'm pretty good with expenses when traveling but the food in the area are so expensive. I had a rental car and could have gone to the suburbs for cheaper dining but my 19 year old was not feeling well. So how's your restriction? How much cc's did you receive? Have you pb'd yet? I have... in the mornings 2 consecutive days... today and yesterday... I'm going to try yogurt for breakfast and just coffee or tea. I seem to eat fine at lunch and dinner. Hanna -
Hematoma - Port Bruised - Please Help
WAgal replied to Jenn's topic in Gastric Band Support & Discussion
Jenn, If you haven't found it here's her post... I would still go on the web of OCC and call the 24 hour emergency and talk to Dr. Martinez... he answers the phone personally and he will be able to diagnose better if he asks Debbie the questions directly. I'll be praying for Debbie! Hanna *********** Hello fellow banditos! I did wanted to give you all an update after my 4/4 surgery. I was discharged Saturday around 9:00 a.m. and a group of the girls went shopping. While Calicat and I were shopping, I noticed that my port site had protruded - a great bit. It was scary looking. One of our banditos was a RN and she suspected it was a hematoma. Dr. Martinez (who I absolutely love!) came to the hotel the next morning and looked at my port site, my skin color, my hands, my eyes, my tongue. He said it was a hematoma and made arrangements for me to go back to the clinic that day (Sunday) to be wrapped and for an antibiotic. Nurse Sophia was there on her day off with her beautiful daughter. Sophia wrapped my stomach and filled the elastic wrap with gauze so I could safely fly home the next day. I was given Keflex which is the worse tasting antibiotic made. Bad thing is - we can't swallow pills so I had to crush and swallow. Y.U.C.K.! I was also given a prescription for additional Keflex and Sophia and her daughter drove us back to the hotel. We flew home yesterday and I had a comfortable-enough flight. The elastic band wrapping made it more comfortable and I believe did the trick because my port site looks so much better. I don't look 9 months pregnant on one half of my belly anymore. However, I do have a huge bruise which is scary to look at. I think now the bruising will change colors to brown and then eventually go away. I did go back to work today. Remember I was banded Friday around 2. p.m. I'm a paralegal so the heaviest thing I lift is a file (not too heavy, eh)? Managed the day with some white grape juice, a banana popcicle, and some chicken broth. I think I'm starting to like the chicken broth! No rush for me to start the next phase (drinkable yogurts). I'm not hungry and have to force myself to eat/drink. I'm still sore, especially when getting up and down out of a chair. I'm SO freakin excited about the upcoming weight loss that I cannot stop talking about it Ohhhh here's a funny. You all will just love this.....I arrived at work today and was called to the front desk to pick up "something." Got there and there was this H.U.G.E. basket of goodies delivered to me from my firm. How hilarious is that!!!!?? There were pretzels, candy bars, cheese, crackers, candy, ohmygawd did I just want to slap the office administrator who ordered it!?!?!?!? Heck yeah .. but I did imagine eating some of the pepper cheese for about 20 seconds. We're going to open the basket on April 24th!! but hopefully I will be full from some real food and won't care one bit about it! Toodles! *********** -

WAgal's Experience of 1st Fill in TJ
WAgal replied to WAgal's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Testimonials
Hi Pargirl, Yes, I was told to wait until today to start eating solid food but I didn't wait. On Saturday only 24 hours after the fill I ate a small omelette with veges and bacon. I ate like a good bandster and chewed.. I didn't finish but 3/4 of it (about 8 oz. I'd say) and felt the full feeling so I stopped. Yes I did the extended stay after being filled so I could check if I'm not too restricted so I can return right away and do a little unfill had it been too tight. My restriction is right for me so far. Oh yes... the scale thing... I was just checking today and 2 lbs. dropped. Yes! But I think it's a combination of not feeling well when I left Thursday for the trip and then after being filled I'm really eating less. I'm happy again knowing my band is working. I'll post in a week to let you know how it's going. So far it's great. Notes: I don't seem to do well eating first thing in the morning. I'm going to do the warm beverage and have yogurt for these next few days. Today and yesterday I felt the food really going down. It hurt a bit... it passes but it's really not the way I want to have breakfast every morning. So today and yesterday I just ate my breakfast for lunch, since it was not comfortable. I'm trying not to skip breakfast because Dr. Miranda said it was important to kick start my metabolism to being normal again, to not skip breakfast or meals. Zulma's advise about shopping in TJ was that as long as we were about during the day then we were going to be fine and we were. We went to get our meds at the pharmacy and it's an adventure in itself! I needed my pain meds fast 'cause I had a tooth post implant done that day and the pain killer was wearing off. Lisa again came to my rescue and gave me one of her old pain killer from our surgery 7 weeks ago. It didn't kick in fast enough so as soon as I bought the pain med prescribed I took another one. I was fine... if I started to act strange then I had my girlfriends looking out for me. -

Hi Michelle! I just read your blog... cool... I'll email you the pics as soon as I can... can you message me your email address. Don't know if I have it.. Am I able to send pics to you via Myspace? -
I had my daughter's done while we got our fill and yes it is so worth it! It cost us $250 and her teeth whitened even more 2 days after which Dr. Ana said it would. Meredith is so happy and I love the results... it's so white!!! It's definitely given her a new sense of confidence... she's smiling a lot more!!!! LOL! I on the other hand have more dental work than I anticipated before I can even think about teeth whitening... I had an implant done ... yeah long story but the wrong tooth was pulled out by my local dentist here about a year and a half ago so I'm getting that tooth replaced with an actual crown implant. I'll be back in 4 months for my crown. Price...$1600. Has anyone else done an implant... I know Melody did too she is from Canada. Melody email me if you see this!

Our group’s first fill! Zulma, Michelle, Linda, Lisa, Hanna Hi all, I thought you might be interested in how our fill went on April 18, ’08. Well it went just great. Where do I begin? We all met at the Omni Hotel for our girl’s night out. Linda, Michelle, Evette, myself and Meredith, my daughter went to dinner at Oceanair Restaurant. Lisa and Kelsey stayed behind ‘cause they had dinner already. I didn’t get into the hotel until 7:30pm... there was a Padres’ game and it was a bustling time of the evening. check out our pics at: http://www.myspace.com/hlapband Oceanaire has the most fantastic crabcakes. We ordered just the appetizer portion and there were lump crabs on every bite and delicious. Anyways thanks for that Evette, you are a sweetheart! Zulma came in the morning to collect us all at Omni and we headed for the border. We had a little obstacle on the freeway but got there on time. It was peaceful enough at the OCC lobby with the new bandsters to be until Cassie and Jenn showed up a few minutes later. Well of course I had to start introducing myself and who I was when I was just really excited to see them and hug them! So we did! Then we got talking and talking or I guess should I say we were LOUD! Everyone was just talking to each other. Claudia did have to yell at the top of her lungs to get the people she needed but overall I think OCC was happy to have us all there and all of us just being happy to be back at OCC. Again there were 8 surgeries plus one. Long story behind the plus one. I saw some of the same wonderful staff and it was reassuring. We took pictures but no Dr. O or Dr. M... Understandably as this was the new patients time with the docs and there were 8 plus one surgeries occurring that day! Meredith, Linda and myself had dental appointments so the rest of the gang went off shopping and came back for us later and off we went to the farmacias (pharmacies). So cool..it’s so cheap. My meds for pain and antibiotics (I had an tooth implant done) was dirt cheap. We are so blessed to have Zulma, our latina Spanish speaking bandster girlfriend with us. She knew the area and got us around safely. Thank you so MUCH Zulma, you rock in my book! The fill: Omgosh! It was easy peasy!!! ALYSSA, this is for you! You have nothing to worry about! Hanna the big baby about needles did not feel anything except for a tiny pinch, an ant bite hurts more! So sweetie pie there is nothing to worry about. I will advise that you just look away because I did. Michelle took pictures of my fill process and the needle looks intimidating but what you feel is hardly nothing! I could deal with looking at a needle in my belly after the event but not during. step by step process: Dr. Romero did our fill, he is wonderful and talks to you about each step and process so that you know exactly what he is doing and what is about to happen. Dr. Romero was so great and an expert at this: 1)checks while on the x-ray location of your port and band to see all is well 2)wipes a topical solution to numb and clean area, then the “pinch” 3)there’s pressure when the rest of the needle is inserted, no pain...he is quick, he wraps the needle portion with gauze so it doesn’t look so intimidating 4)he has you sit up and under x-ray, drink barium so you see the liquid movement before your fill... all goes swishing right into your stomach. 5)he puts the saline solution and is feeling for the perfect pressure. he told me he never puts in more that 2cc on the first fill. he has you sip the rest of the barium and magic, you have restriction. 6)I don’t know exactly how he determines the amount of saline to put but the movement of the flow of the barium has definitely slowed down after I rec’d 1.7cc. 7)he takes the needle out.. again no pain and you are done! This is long so I’ll sign off. Questions? Don’t hesitate to ask any of us. Oh Jenn and Cassie you two are the best also! And my gals of bandsters, YAY.. we did it... sorry, but after the fill Mere was feeling sick... we took it easy and she SLEPT a lot! Yay, I have restriction!!! Will post how I feel in a few days. Hanna

Hey! I love your little exercising maniac on the treadmill!!! It made me laugh!!! How cute is that!! That's probably what I look like when I exercise!!! LOL!! Hanna

Hi Michelle and all, I'm thinking dinner attire... wear whatever you are comfortable with. We're considering Ocean Air... Evette's suggestion... Evette can give us a better indication of attire. Originally I was thinking the Harbor House but Evette says Ocean Air is nice and a seafood fare. Anyone allergic to seafood? I'll be calling you all today! See you soon!!! Hanna

Hi Amy, I have diabetes II, onset type and was diagnosed in 2003. It has been encouraging so far since I was banded and am 7weeks post op. My glucose reading had run amuck (before surgery)....my fasting never went below 170-200. That's fasting, on a good day my best reading was 170 and sometime it was a crazy higher number! One day after surgery I took my fasting glucose and it was 120.. did it again a few days later still 120. I now take my glucose midday and it's been a remarkable 137 (that's after a meal after an hour). Readings before was at least 200 after 2 hours after a meal. I think I'm making better choices with food... still have my temptations but that's why I can't wait to be "filled" in a few days. We that were banded in Feb. 28 definitely need restriction now. I'm so hungry all the time and can eat w/out any restriction. Again I'm still learning what I can eat as far as things going down well but I find it's probably because I don't do the 30 chews per bite!!! It has been very encouraging so far and was told that since I was pretty recently diagnosed... remission is very high like in the 90th percentile. I'm not taking any meds anymore for diabetes or high blood pressure... I think all my pills made me sick as I had insomnia and aches and pains of all sorts. I now sleep through the night and have not had any of what I call "the dead limb syndrome" You know when you first wake up in the morning and your foot/hand/arm is asleep... I got it all the time and now have not had it... again a remarkable thing for me. Please do not compare yourself to me as far as results.. Your doctor is still the best indication of your health status. When I went to see my general doctor here, he said that he was behind me in the lapband surgery. He didn't want me to go to Mexico but that was my decision. My last a1c reading was 9.2!!! Yes very high. That was 8 weeks ago, just before surgery. I'll go in to have this a1c testing again in another month and I can't wait to see the results! I also paid out of my own pocket and do not regret my decision. All went well and am looking forward to the journey of a healthier better looking me!!! You take care and you can email me or send a message to me here on the forum if you have further questions. The people here are wonderful in supporting bandsters and future bandsters. We know how you feel that's why! Blessings, Hanna

Hi momonamission, it's me the gal with the orange hair! LOL! I really didn't mean for you to go through all that trouble explaining to me the solution... you are SOO Sweet!!! You belong with us here and I'm glad you have made your decision. Yay!!!! About my hair... I'm not too worried, I was told that I can go to the salon and have it redone in 3 weeks?? Is that true? Something about giving my hair time to relax before I do something to it again and damage my hair. We don't have a Sally's here... we have a Karin's beauty supply... I think they have all the hair products there that you were mentioning... I don't really have time to worry about it right now as my child is sick and I leave in 2 days for my fill in TJ... Yes we are meeting up about 5 of us who had our surgery on the 28th of Feb. Therefore the ladies will see my monstrosity! LOL!!! I'll style my hair nicely and hope that it won't look too bad! Keep posting.. and keep researching.. If when I return from the fill and I still can't stand my hair then I'm going to try what you posted here.. I'm going to copy now! LOL (Lots of laugh), we try to be funny here with the reality of things.. sometimes it helps to not be soo serious.. You take care and I'll see around the forum! Hanna

Hi all, I just wanted to update the results of my acne problem.. It all cleared up on my face and back on the 12th day.. still not sure what it was but maybe toxins making their way out through my skin? I'm just glad it worked itself out! Hanna
-
momonamission, hi there! will you do my recoloring of my hair? i went away for the weekend got inspired by MamaMichelle to have a haircut and color... actually I did highlights but I think I look like an Orangatang!!! I'm Asian with blonde highlights!!! I was promised dark brown highlights that were suppose to look natural.. I know there are people out there laughiing at me, this! I have never done this before... I love my cut but the highlights arrgggg... that's me showing frustration...I growl. anyways my little girls (4 and 5) said mom we want your black hair back and to take off my hair now! That about says it all, i think. Vanity!!! your story is so very similar to mine. my advise is if you have family, sisters and sister-in-laws and mother-in-law.. don't tell them... that's my only regret. my husband was behind me since I started researching lapband about 1 1/2 years ago. i finally did it when i convinced my husband to have it done with dr. ortiz. my husband barely understood what lapband really entails but he opened his mouth and told his mom and then she told my sister-in-laws and and my sisters (i told them, i think, 'cause i said what the heck..my in-laws already knows) found out and then my mom. my point is i was exhausted telling everyone about the procedure over and over again and again. some were frustrating me because they had attitude. they kept asking ridiculous questions like how much will you loose right after surgery after they cut out the fat??? yeah... it was very frustrating. i finally asked them to pray for me and that it was really my decision and was mostly for my health. I too have diabetes and high blood pressure, sleeplessness, aches in joints and back. My diabetes has not reached normal yet but it has reduced to 137 midday after a meal which usually would register at about 200-almost 300 depending on what I ate. the medication made me feel sick..diarrhea, headaches, hair loss... lots of side effects that were not sitting well with me... I was very lethargic and had no energy. I am now walking every other day, am not taking any meds. i get sleep now... i actually sleep at night which was amazing to me! I really think it was those pills that kept me up at nights, one of those side effects. enough about that. the lapband is a tool and you should really research it thoroughly for yourself, know what to expect before and after surgery. it's no easy task, believe me.. I'm 7 weeks post-op and will be "filled" very soon with my bandster sisters from this forum. i was so excited when i lost 9 lbs before surgery doing the pre-op and then an add'l 11 lbs. i've regained a few lbs. (that's why I can't wait to get filled) but I feel good and I am not gorging on food, since the band will not let you (my experience anyways) we are here to support you if you need us and please do a search on the forum here about your questions... you'll find they have mostly been addressed. i have 2 young children and didn't want to raise them as a fat mommy this time around in mommyhood. i also have two older girls, 21 and 19, that can recall and have honestly said they were somewhat embarrassed by a chubby mom as teens when they saw that some of their friend's moms were normal in size. i did it all.. for my kids and my hubby, who by the way can't wait to see the body he said he married. joking all aside you will not regret the decision to have the surgery done in Mexico... the fear of a TJ facility is a big hoax since the staff there are so wonderful and experienced and the doctors are adorable. the lapband surgery are one of many weight loss surgeries, but from my research, it was the right one for me. "utahmom" Arlene has a doctor for a husband and afer speaking w/Dr. O, he was convinced. best of luck to you and i will pray for you! bless your heart for the tears you shed... you'll find a lot of wonderful supportive people here. if you decide on lapband, do a research on what you should be looking for in a lapband surgeon. decide on a surgeon you trust.. figure out how you will do your fill or if it is included. consider your exercise regime. i did my research and it led me to Dr. O for qualifications/expertise and it saved me money so I decided to do the first fill back at OCC.. if I have time and it's feasible then I will continue at OCC otherwise I already have a local place to have my future fills and unfills. then get involved in a support group. mine is here as you can see. blessings to you and i do hope you join us... Hanna p.s. TJ facility I endorse is only Dr. Ortiz's since that's who I had my surgery with. There are lots of lapband and WLS docs in TJ, but for lapband, I would have to say Dr. Ortiz is the best!
-
Michelle, I'm so sorry.. I must have missed your posting. No problem... I will inform Zulma!!! That's way cool... we can travel together. Zulma in her email told me that it will not take long to get there at all and she will be leaving about 6:30am from LA and will be picking us up about 8am at the Omni Hotel!! So we will all be ready and waiting for her.. Michelle which hotel are you going to be in? Did you need to be picked up elsewhere? Yes, I'm game for the eve of 17th. Evette!!! Where do we go for a light awesome meal and maybe grab a drink too, or maybe like a happy hour thing???? Zulma it's a total of 6 people plus you then 7 all together, is that right ladies??? Okay... I'll get my info. right eventuallly This is not a problem Michelle because Zulma has a van!!! I'm so sorry SWEETIE, my really bad!!! Okay... all is well... be ready with your beautiful smiles. Yay.. we are coming.. OCC get ready for the beautiful ladies that are gonna knock the socks off of people (well maybe by next year ) 'cause we are gonna look hot... again by next year. Any other details that Hanna is not getting right, please post... we will not leave anybody out... we are together in this!!! I love you Michelle!!! Here's my cheer for you joining us in the van ride!!! :cheerleader: Hanna

Oh yay! Thanks Diana for starting the post. I was going to do this last night but fell asleep. Yeah... my little one has the stomach flu so she has been so neeedy and have exhausted me. Well we are off in a few days, my daughter, Meredith (the last time it was Charlene, my first born) is my 2nd child. She is 19 and in college but we will be checking out Biola University in Los Angeles and meeting with a friend and having lunch with my brother on April 17 afternoon. We should be at the Omni by about 7pm or sooner on the 17th. Zulma has generously offered to pick us all up at the Omni Hotel... not sure of the time but we should probably make our way to OCC by 7:45am to make it by 9am? Evette please advise on your knowledge of traffic to the border on a Friday morning. Zulma please verify your pick up time so we will be ready for you at the lobby. Actually I'll send them both email. They are such dolls! :cheerleader: For the fill: We have Lisa and her daughter, myself and my daughter, Linda and Zulma. Michelle, you'll be at Lucerna already, right? You can just meet us at OCC by 9am. Jenn and Cassie were you going to be there on the 18th too w/2 bandster to be? So we will definitely be seeing you there and have Dr. O do that group picture with all of us! Evette our local SD bandster girlfriend will be hooking up with us too, YAY! So maybe we can get together on the eve of the 18th at ???(Evette suggestions). Evette if you can or are able to get away from work then coming with us to OCC to take pics and hanging out with the gals would be great... that way you will get a glimpse of what to expect on your fill date and be used to the idea of that needle that I'm still not too happy with (so Diane... tell Allysa I'm a big baby about it and she's not alone... I will let you and her know about the experience) From what I've read the topical spray stings more than the actual poking of the needle so that is reasssuring that the needle can't possibly be that big of a deal.. I'll just look away!!!! For those of you that plan on doing some sight seeing and other stuff in SD or need advise on local stuff to do, we have Evette as a resource so please send her a message/email on this forum, her screen name is: oxxevettexxo. My direct email address is: ramilhanna@gmail.com Okay all... I'll see you soon, have a safe trip and leave me your room number at the desk at Omni Hotel, so I'll know what room you are in and can call you. :lb21: FILL date here we come!!! I really can't wait!
-
Kris you look fantabulous!!! I'm anxiously waiting for my turn! LOL! You can do it... you can lose the last few pounds to reach your goal but you really look soo great already!! Thanks for the inspiration! Hanna
-
Congrats... healing time for you right now! Yes relax for awhile! We go back for our fill soon, can't wait! Hanna
-
OMgosh Bebe... I was following her too ... she had the lapband done right here at NWWLC in Everett near me!!!! She had the the lapband with the doctor I was considering just before I went with Dr. O, his name is Dr. Montgomery. I haven't been looking at Utube in awhile but she is very complete in detail. I considered it then said nahhh.. too much work for me... posting pics is the most I can do and some blogging. Hanna
-
Oh Mackenzie, I'm so jealous and can't wait to be where you are now. Our group fill is coming up very soon.. I leave in 3 day!! Yay!!! I so welcome that full feeling.. I have been ravenous... trying not to devour everything has been a challenge! I went to a min reunion in Cali this past weekend and oh boy.. the place we stayed at had great meals... I fought back trying to eat an entire meal. Ohh questio to all.. my sister made a comment that my belly was looking big. I've lost weight but wow she is right. What's with my tummy? Does anyone have that problem? I wanna do sit ups but I'm not suppose to until 3 mos. post op. Anyway... here we come with the fill and we're just a week behind you MacKenzie. Keep us posted of the weight loss and exercise and any good or bad experiences. Hanna

Yay MacKenzie! I'm so jealous.. to start loosing weight again and that full feeling (I really miss it). The gals and I go next week.. so I reallllly can't wait! Keep us posted and thanks for the info on the fill. Am still squeamish about the thought of that long needle! eeekkks.. Hanna =D> -
Michelle, Wow... I'm glad you are feeling better! That was very weird... We're not drinkers, my husband and myself. But for heart health benefits we were going to try to start drinking a glass of red wine for dinner. Now I'm kinda scared... I was thinking red wine before starting our meals.. but now I'm reluctant. I never tolerated alcohol well when I was younger. I'd have one of those Boonesfarm Strawberry Hill and break out in hives all over my neck and back, but 24 hours later it would be gone... I just remember it had a hot feel to it and it would itch! Oh and the chicken fingers thing. My little kids and I used to buy fried chicken at Fred Meyer (grocery store in the NW) at least once or twice a week. I still like to eat the wings... they're crunchy and flavorfull (code word for high in fat and cholesterol! LOL!). I have to kill old habits or I'll be in trouble. I want these little ones to have a good role model in healthy eating, especially since diabetes runs in my family! I am still learning... I have head knowledge but some things I do just seems to happen automatically and I really am trying harder to be self aware of these bad habits and changing them for life. Stick with whatever you're doing 'cause you are doing so well!! Hanna =D>
