fill doctors in nj/ny area
bdaterri replied to happymom's topic in Fill Doctors & Fill Trips to Tijuana
I come from Bermuda to have my fills with Fill Centers USA/Dr Lee in Mt Laurel, NJ. He's great and I would highly recommend going to him. if you request Flouro, he will meet you at a Radiology center for your fill. I had both my fills done with flouro and I'm happy with the results (surgery w Dr Ortiz March 2008, 1st fill September 2008, 2nd fill November 2008). Happy to report that I have lost 63lbs since the first fill! -

Me, as an extra in Das Traumschiff, a German movie they filmed here in Bermuda. 68 lb weightloss since first fill which was about 6 months after surgery (couldn't get back to the US at the recommended time for first fill). -
So in general, my experience with the OCC was very good. Dr Ortiz was informative and charming, the other staff and nurses were very nice also and helped me to feel relaxed. Lucerna was okay... If you are used to 5 star hotels anywhere else in the world, this definitely was not. I would say it was about a 3 at the most but the staff were professional and helpful and the rooms were clean and secure. My only issues with the whole experience were mostly minor and are as follows: When we checked into the hotel, we were not given any information regarding schedules for pre-op tests, surgery day etc, which would have been helpful. I guess I should have asked these questions before I left Bermuda but since it was a package, I was expecting that someone would call or visit me at the hotel with that information. Pre-op test day, we (my mother and I were both scheduled for surgery on the 19th) woke up early and while hanging out on our porch, saw Mrs. Ortiz collecting and dropping off other patients so I thought maybe she would call us or come to our room to let us know when we would need to be ready by so that she could take us to the center. Around 8am I tried calling the center but got a busy tone before I even completed dialling the number so for half an hour I thought I wasn't dialling correctly. Finally called front desk to ask what I was doing wrong and was told I couldn't call out because I had no credit on the room which was not a big deal since the front desk offered to dial for me and connect me. This took about half an hour for them to figure out but I finally got hold of the center at around 9am and they said they would send someone to collect us then. (For future patients, ask what times you should be ready to be collected each day before you get there!) I think it was Francisco that came to collect us soon after. In the office there was a wait for all the pre-op tests, but I am used to waiting ages in a doctor's office so in comparison, it wasn't that bad, just maybe a little disorganised, but then again it was busy. We had all our tests done but the dentist check, which they said we would get the next day but I don't think we did (unless they did it while we were under during surgery..?). Francisco took us back to the hotel around 12pm and we had forgotten to ask what time we were getting collected the next day so he phoned the center to ask for us. That was pretty much it in the way of minor issues. The main problem was our trip from the airport in San Diego to Lucerna: After waiting at baggage claim for about half an hour for someone holding a sign with our name on it, I called the number for Francisco to see if he would be there soon. He was apparently not scheduled to pick us up but he said someone else would be there shortly and to look out for him (found out later that Francisco must not do pickups after 5pm). So about half hour after the call, a gentleman did come for us but did not speak much English (or just chose not to speak much to us). I tried to make conversation and he said we were collecting another person at Terminal 1. The person turned out to be two pretty young Mexican girls but yet they had no luggage so I'm not too sure what the deal was with them. After they hopped into the van, I heard them giving the driver directions in spanish and I knew we weren't going straight to the hotel, but the driver didn't tell us where we were going or that we would be making a stop. So after a drive towards the docks and a barren area, and then a turn down an alley into a housing neighborhood, one of the girls told the driver where to stop and she got out of the van and ran into a run-down looking house next to a fenced basketball court with barbed wire around the top (like prison fencing!). My mom and I were scared at that point but we had the best faith we could because the OCC would not let an incriminating driver pick us up I'm sure! However, later we joked that we were worried our organs were about to be snatched or that she was stopping to pick up a delivery of drugs... Anyway, the girl must have just stopped for her overnight stuff and we got to the hotel okay (the girls must have gotten dropped off somewhere else after - maybe they were related to the driver?). But it was still a bit worrying at first. Oh, and I had a problem coming back over the border at the end of the trip because they thought I should have an I-94 slip to get back into the states but really it's only EU passports that need one, regular Bermuda passports do not! It took the border patrol an hour to confirm this even though I told them so! Other than that, everything was great. The surgery facilities were top notch and clean, for those worried about surgeries in (or even travelling to) Mexico. I even brushed my teeth with hotel water and I'm still alive and not sick (didn't swallow any of course!) And I still have my organs, which I am grateful for =D>

DO WE "HAVE" TO TAKE A CREDIT CARD???
bdaterri replied to fat2nrml's topic in Gastric Band Support & Discussion
You will need to use a credit card for incidentals at the hotel (phone calls, charging anything to your room), but if you need to call Dr. Ortiz's office, you can always call the front desk and they will call for you and connect you. Other than that, it's best to use cash in shops. FYI, there is a sunglasses store in the Plaza del Rio which sells designer shades for cheaper than you can find them in San Diego. If I can dig up the name, I'll post it. -
If all goes well, I should be leaving Bermuda tomorrow and arriving in TJ tomorrow night! The weather is supposed to be bad here though, gale force winds etc, so hopefully our flight won't be cancelled or delayed since I am ready to go NOW! Long day ahead of me, but looking forward to seeing everyone and getting this done finally! Good luck fellow bandsters.. see you guys soon! Terri >

I found it very hard not to cheat this weekend Have to try even harder not to give in to temptation this week.. today someone at my job was eating something that smelled like tacos.. mmm.. so I popped some metamucils and I'll be going for my shake in a little while. I should get a gas mask to wear at work so that the smells don't get to me! How are you doing Amanda?

Bummer! Thanks Kim I'll have to do some calling around then, or just go to the nearest FillcenterUSA since they will do it..

I'll be there on the 17th!! My flight gets into San Diego around 6:30pm though so not sure what time I'll get to the hotel but would love to meet up! Does anyone know what time shops close on weekdays there? Terri

Hi everyone, Does anyone have experience with fill centers on the East Coast, besides the ones mentioned on the FillcentersUSA website (I can look into those ones myself)? Since I will have to fly to the States everytime I need a fill, I need to find a center in a State that has a direct flight from Bermuda. I too am worried that some centers won't give me fills knowing I was banded in Mexico. Do they confirm where you went? I could always just say San Diego if they don't ask for proof of where you went... Let me know! Terri

Hi Amanda! I'm a smoker too.. but I "quit" Friday before last.. since then, I had 3 one of the first nights while hanging out with some friends who smoke. Other than that not one! It was a bit easier than I thought since I know I am stopping for a good cause, and the fact that I am trying to concentrate on my diet etc. I started thinking of it as just a short term thing until after surgery but I'm sure by that time, I won't even want one. Two weeks to go!! My PRE-pre-op diet is going okay.. I've been trying to do the 2 shakes and lean cuisine diet before 12 days starts but I've cheated on a few meals.. Won't be able to cheat after Friday!! But I'm all booked and ready to go. Nerves are good, the only concern I have is where to get a fill after. No matter what, I'll have to fly to the US as they don't do these sorts of procedures in Bermuda but I am worried that if I have to tell them I was banded in Mexico they will refuse to fill me! Hopefully that won't happen.. I'm excited to meet everyone and get this done! Speak soon, Terri

Has anyone had a problem getting a fill from a center that did not supply the surgery? I am just concerned that getting the band in Mexico will limit where I can get the fills done. I live in Bermuda so it's not economical for me to travel to the West Coast every 6 weeks to travel down to TJ for an adjustment. Let me know!!

POST SURGERY ACTIVITY AND EXERCISE
bdaterri replied to Dolittle's topic in Gastric Band Support & Discussion
I found a great link to a forum with people who've been banded discussing the the types and amount of exercise they did from the few weeks after surgery, to where they currently are with their weight. I found it pretty informative... and gave me hope that one day I might actually LIKE exercise!! http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f81/exercise-af...hen-what-51623/ Two weeks to go til TJ!! -
surgery march 20th anyone else?
bdaterri replied to kristasue's topic in Gastric Band Support & Discussion
Hi Krista, My surgery date is March 19th, so I'll probably see you around! I'm coming from Bermuda. Speak to you later! Terri -
Kristi and Kym, Thank you for your comments. I am about to be banded in March, and I have had some unsupportive comments from two friends who don't understand what my issues are really like - one of them is strongly against me having lap-band surgery, even though she's had a breast reduction for vanity/health reasons... the other just said well try Hoodia, how much do you exercise, etc. Do they think I just sit on my ass all day and devour all kinds of junk food and that I haven't tried all kinds of weight loss methods and diets? It's crazy, but I'll show them that it works when I'm able to wear a swimsuit sans tshirt and shorts at the beach! That said, I've also been considering the mental issues I will have when I do lose the weight and start to second guess what guys intentions are when they ask me out or talk to me. Do they want to get to know me, or are they just looking at me as a hot piece of ***! It will be hard to tell, that's for sure.. Does counselling really help? Terri
