  1. Hey AngelanAnn, You really should focus on doing less strenuous exercise while on the liquids and taking less calories; you can burn yourself out and cause fainting and other not fun issues. Unless you can really pump in the vitamins, and protein I recommend taking it a little bit slower right now. I can’t eat much when traveling, and I found that when I jump back into my exercise class that’s pretty intense I actually can make myself really sick. And then it takes me even longer to get back on track and focused on the programs. It’s not worth pushing it. So glad you had everything taken care of and you’re working it now! Best, Lisa
  2. Thank you for such a sweet note! You're on an amazing journey & you'll hit your goals before you know it! Have fun & I’m always here for help along the way!

  3. You're actually doing fine, most people with low BMI's do lose slower. You have to think in percentages; you've lost 60% of your weight in just over a year. (That beats what I did) Not bad, and think of how you changed your body with eating better and exercise. Even though your choices aren’t real good, I bet they are way better than they were over a year ago. I believe that a lot of how well we do is based on our mental attitude. So keep up the hard work and keep believing in yourself and in your band, if you didn’t get it would you have gained another 20 pounds, or would you have over 100 pounds to lose by now? You really don’t know where you would be, but most likely not 40 pounds lighter, with a more toned body and over halfway to your goal. Take care, keep working it, it will come together and don’t focus on the negative, I know it’s hard when you’re not where you want to be, but it really doesn’t do any good. Focus on the positive and think about how much you’ve accomplished. I know that part of my weight problem was due to all of my negative thinking and thoughts. When I realized that that was a big reason for my obesity I made a decision to “kick” it out of my life and really try to focus on the positive. I truly believe that was a big part of my success, realizing that thinking negative thoughts about myself (and others) was really harmful and finally taking control over it was a huge mile stone for me. Take care; I think you’re doing awesome! Lisa
  4. Well, here's my opinion. I don't drink ice water right after a fill, it tends to constrict my band and tighten me up. (Also when you say sucking where you using a straw) that can cause problems. So in my book, you kind of did some things that could/may have caused you to tighten up, not a 100% sure, but its things I don’t do when I first get a fill. When I first get a fill I tend to take it easy, I always have a bottle of room temperature water in the car waiting for me and sip on that. I don’t push it; I stick to liquids, focus on staying away from salty foods, don’t stress myself out and stay away from things that might cause my band to tighten. (Right now you most likely are extra tight due to the stress and worry; you'll probably loosen up as soon as you relax a bit). It’s amazing how stress can affect our bands. I really doubt that you stretched your pouch if you truly have been eating small meals (start measuring how much you are eating to understand the amount of food you consume and make sure you're not drinking when eating). I never assume anything, and I’ve learned to trust myself and my band. So take a big breath, and stop worrying, I know it’s hard, but the truth is I don’t think you hurt your band. And normally if you have stretched it, they first just put you on a liquid diet for a while to see if you can bring it back, so you may just try doing that right now. Start over, it’s going to be fine – tomorrows a new day and just take a deep breath and go! You're most likely going to be fine! (I'm 99% sure you're good and the .01% isn't worth worrying about right now). (Also since you're in Kirkland, if you ever want to meet up at Bellevue Square, just let me know. I work a couple of blocks away and I'd be happy to meet you there) Lisa
  5. I’ve had colds before where the phlegm and mucus have coated my throat and made my band tighter. I've had the shakes before, it’s a clear sign you most likely needs some extra vitamins and protein to keep you going. I wouldn't be too worried if was just a small bout; just make sure you're eating right in the future. (since you told your doc and she's not to worried - I wouldn't be). In regards to the swelling from phlegm, for me it’s always worse in the AM since we’re lying down throughout the night and better at night since we’re up during the day and don’t’ have as much congestion. It’s likely this has caused swelling (especially if you’re coughing or clearing your throat to get rid of the phlegm) and it continues to get aggravated so you’re smart to go in and get checked out. Take care and hope you're feeling better soon, don't stress too much about it - that only makes it worse. Lisa
  6. (I had to quickly write this at lunch – I love this topic). I only eat when I’m hungry and at first it was really difficult – I’ve been going to Onvo http://www.onvo.com/ since February to really focus on becoming educated on how to eat, what to eat, and when. With my band food no longer controls me so my goal was to learn as much about it so I could form some sort of control over it, to continue to improve my health and long term maintenance. It’s only my fuel now and often like how I hate to gas up my car, I completely agree it can be a pain to eat. Part of Dr. Mark’s teachings is to only eat when you are hungry, and to be honest with the band that can be difficult, (its heard to know when we are truly hungry) but doable once you learn how to listen to what hunger means to you. And it takes some time to get that. (It’s all trial and error – you have to get to the “I’m really hungry” stage a few times to be able to pick up the cues specific to your body). He says to think of it like gassing up our car; we should only eat when we are on empty and about to run out of gas. I eat very healthy now, only when hungry and I’m in an awesome workout program with Jason at Onvo. I’ve learned to stabilize my weight, I look better and I’m pretty darn lean, but my body looks awesome, I feel great and my hair and skin are better than ever. I think we each need to find out what works best for us, and it took me a while to find this and really commit to it. What I like most about losing weight is when I tell people that I’ve lost over 130 pounds most say that I don’t look like I was ever overweight. That was my goal and I’m thrilled to have reached it. We’re all in this together – and remember, what often works for one person won’t work for everyone –so don’t sweat it if you don’t follow the norm, that’s what makes us unique and so cool! Best, Lisa
  7. Congrats Lea! Welcome to bandland ~ let the journey begin!!
  8. You look awesome!! Congrats - you've just got to feel like a million bucks. And you are totally rocken it girl! You're one of the skinny girls now! Lisa
  9. Hey Susan, I'm so glad you called the OCC – and sorry you’re going through this. You’re doing great – and I bet after the liquid diet he’s got you on, you’re going to be rocken! Take care and know its all going to work out! Lisa
  10. There are times when I can feel my port more than others. It’s never been really uncomfortable, it’s just telling me that its there. I believe since we are losing weight, (nice soft fat cushion – gone baby gone) and gaining muscle (hard and tough, but pretty damn sexy) it changes how the port sits and feels. In addition I know mine has built a layer of scar tissue on it. So there are times when I can really feel it, however it always settles down after the adjustments to my body. It’s odd, I’m guessing yours is most likely the normal changes that happens as our body changes - but keep an eye on it and if it gets too uncomfortable call the OCC. I know some people have had to move their port after losing weight, its not a big deal and from what I've heard its pretty reasonable at the OCC. Best, Lisa
  11. How awesome - I'm so excited for you! And what a good looking guy (he looks a lot like your Dad) - very handsome! You look great, cute dress! (You, your Mom and your sister sure look alike) I have 3 boys; they're all out of High School, its amazing how fast they grow up! Congrats! Lisa
  12. I’ve lost over 130 pounds. My life has completely changed. I can’t believe the things I use to “not do” because of my weight. There’s nothing I can’t do now, my health is better, I look better and feel better. Its amazing to wear normal clothes, I use to be a size 22 or 3X – I’m now a size 4 pants (some size 2) and 6 or 8 tops. I’m getting ready to go to a conference were I will be speaking, it’s a group of leaders in my profession and there are some really big names attending. There’s no way I’d go before – let along speak – and now I’m totally looking forward to it. (I was just upstairs trying to chose which bathing suit to bring, one piece or bikini…..) Both are cute! Come on now girl, you can stick with it – just a little bit longer – your new you will feel so much betting than any little bit of food will (that I know after wards you will regret and hate it anyhow). And the food my cause a slip – so don’t do it – be strong and get ready for a new sexy you!! The food will temporarily make you feel better, losing the weight is long term, butte' kicking feel good - do the right thing! Best, Lisa
  13. I did the same thing; I started researching my local Lap band Doctor’s and found out that he had proctored most of them. (And many of the nurses had their bands put in by Dr. Ortiz as well). I’ve had my band for 2 years, 8 months. Lost over 130 pounds and I can say I’ve ever heard anything bad about him or had any problems myself. He’s very professional, does a great job and takes wonderful care of his patients. Here’s the deal, when you go out to him for your band, you do with the understanding that you are going you are saving a substantial amount of money, however take some of that savings and put it into your “savings” account for airfare if needed to take a fast trip back to the OCC if needed. If something happens to my band, I want Dr. Ortiz to be the one to handle any problems. Remember, things can happen, we control how we treat our bands, and if we take good care of them, the chances are we won’t have any problems. If we don’t – we BP too much, eat too much, and don’t chew – don’t follow the rules – there’s a chance we’re going to have issues and something may happen to our band. (And we can do everything right and something may happen). You just need to be prepared to go back to the OCC for any problems. And make that decision ahead of time so you have organized in your bank account and in your head. There have been very few issues that have happened over the almost 3 years I’ve been on the board, but based on averages and that we are human beings with eating problems we’re going to see some and we need to be prepared to go back to Dr. Ortiz for help with band problems. I’m so glad I went to him, but always remember, its just a tool, we own how we use it and how we treat it – use it right and treat it well and it’s a very powerful diet tool – don’t and at best you just have something in your body that you paid thousands for and it does nothing to help you lose the weight, at worst you can jeopardize your health. Best, Lisa
  14. Julie, I’m so sorry about this! Call the OCC and let them know as quickly as you can. I don't believe the doc's read the forum too often, since it’s monitored by patients. (I could be wrong, but you don’t want to take chances and its the weekend). I know that the covering doctor said to wait till you’re regular one gets back in a few weeks however, they don’t know the ways of the lap band like Dr. Ortiz does. I also realize you sent everything to the OCC– but call and get to one of the Doc’s to speak with you in person. Remember if its not too late they can just go in and replace your band to the correct position and not remove – that’s why we need to move quickly to get to them if there’s a problem. Take care! Lisa
  15. I am so sad for you - I just can't even imagine. I think most of us are wondering how it became so tight - were you PBing a lot and then finally the swelling was too much and it didn't go down - or was there another reason. (It is just my greatest fear to lose my band). I’m so focused on learning how to eat healthy – however with almost 35 years of bad eating habits (I’ve had eating issues since I was in my teens and I’m almost 47 now) I don’t know if I could do it without my band. I hope you can find the means to go in for another band, one that fits your needs better and allows you to eat healthy and wisely. I hope you can start focusing on healthy eating now, add in some exercise and start preparing your body for a new band while you find the way. Hugs and kisses – (lots you need them) and my thoughts are with you! And remember, being fat is much better than jeopardizing your health - which is what was happening before. I so wish I could help you through this – I so feel your pain. You're not a failure - you hit a bump in the road and got a flat tire, its time to fix the tire and get back on track. Lisa
  16. I think its swelling as well; also did you remove all the fluid from your band during your pregnancy? I also recommend you stick to liquids for at least 24 hours to get the swelling down, but let your doc know so they can help with your diet. I’m a little bit worried about the wee one you’re carrying right now. And want to make sure both Mommy and baby stay safe!
  17. Ouch! I hated the drain more than anything – I had my extended TT done on Friday and the drain removed on Monday – I had swelling but it wasn’t fluid build up that could be removed. It’s interesting how we’re all different! But I don’t think I could take the drain being in there for 2 weeks – I would have had mine out earlier if it wasn’t for the weekend and I had a extended tummy tuck (what they call a body lift at Cosmo). And did you write "drains" as in plural - more than one? I only had one. (Give's me goosebumps just to think of it)
  18. Congrats on getting this done! It’s amazing to watch the changes your body goes through! (Lippo was one of my biggest pains as well). (Shelby you are looking super hot, time to get some skinny jeans girl)!!
  19. I went to Pac Surgical for all buy my first fill, which I did at the OCC. They are knowledgeable, give great fills and don’t have issues supporting patients outside their practice. For next time you should try them out - I really kept on top of my fills and I think that’s why I always lost consistently. Best, Lisa
  20. Welcome, I had the lap band in sept of 06 as well and I had to have a tummy tuck, talk about waves, more of a tsunami.... But it looks great now! Good luck!
  21. So here’s what I think – yes, proteins and veggies are harder for us to eat. Puddings and such are such are called sliders – we avoid them since we can eat too much, not good for you and overall bad calories. You really shouldn’t be drinking when eating. I’m wondering if you are eating too much or are too tight. To check on this, start measuring your foods – proteins, ¼ cup and make them moist. (I’ll boil the dark meat of chicken in broth, or focus on moist fish). Go slow; take tiny bites and chew eat bite 30 times. (No drinking) now think – how am I doing – and how do I feel – am I full? Then go for veggies, ¼ cup, small pieces – cooked soft. Again, go slow; take tiny bites and chew eat bite 30 times. Try for ¼ cup of fruit, you may not be able to finish, and if so try some carbs, (Nothing over ¼ cup and don’t drink anything). We don’t eat a lot – but you can be defeating the purpose of your band if you drink in eat, but make sure you learn the limits of your band, and remember we do have limits. Also with your hunger, make sure its not head hunger – that’s’ something you need to fight and work on. Avoid sliders at all costs, chocolate mousse and puddings – chips – cookies. They will go right through. It is uncomfortable to eat protein – that’s why we eat them first – they fill us up – don’t go through our band fast (they don’t slide) and make us fuller faster and longer. When you drink water try squeezing a lemon in it – get something good for you that may help you like it better and slice some ginger and add for flavor and to get rid of the nausea. (Make sure you don’t eat it, its for a little flavoring only). Also I'm heading out for business for a week so everyone take care and have a great Memorial day! Think of all those awesome men and women serving our Country, past and present! I just want to give them all a big hug and kiss! (And a big thank you to their spouses, parents, children, family and loved ones). (Went with some of my neighbors to lay flags at a cemetery for the veterans’ – wow it really makes you think…) All the best, Lisa
  22. I have a pretty good feeling that I will have fills and unfills throughout my life. I also have talked to a few that have had their bands for over 5 years and have done this. (Not allot but things do happen) Sometimes we get tight, need to alleviate it and sometimes we may over indulge and need to go back on a diet – I like the lap band diet – the feeling of not being hungry, I also agree that my focus is on learning how to eat right and exercise – and I’m doing darn well, however I am human… And I will make mistakes and need help – yaa for my band still being here if needed! On another note Anne, I think you need a fill, if you’re not at your goal and you’re not losing weight and you’re eating more than you should – take full advantage of your band. Do the right things, eat good foods, protein first, followed by fruits/veggies and last carbs, drink lots of water (I add in a lemon for taste and it’s a great way to get rid of water weight) also don’t forget to exercise – its amazing what it can do for your body! Summer is the best time to get back on the band wagon - nice weather - got to wear those darn little shorts, (and swimsuits) keep at it girls! Make those bodies sexy hard bodies, come on now - you can do it! Lisa
  23. Of course - we love having you here! This is Dr. Otiz's forum, many who are like you and don't have resources use it. (Plus we are darn good). And this is just another thing to add to the long list of why it’s good to go to the OCC, Dr. Ortiz does pay for this, and had it built for us – he’s really into making sure we’re successful with our bands and this is one of our tools. Best, Lisa
  24. Hey Arianna, Good for you for helping your friend out. One thing I’d like to point out is that we didn’t have our bands done in the States; we had them placed in Tijuana Mexico by Dr. Ortiz at the Obesity Center, http://www.obesitycontrolcenter.com/. The cost in the States average is about $17,000 (per my last looking). You can see the cost savings noted by AshleyMarie. I was going to have mine done in the States, however I found that Dr. Ortiz had proctored most of the Doctors that I was looking to have do my band – my thoughts were why not go to the guy who’s teaching the other doctors how to do this? And many of the nurses (you’ll notice on the forum that many are in the medical field) had gone to Dr. Ortiz. Yes, his cost is lower, and he has a great facility, but he also has more experience than most. In addition, if you have any issues he’s not too far from the States, and has great follow-up – (you have to let them know and get to them). For fills the cost is about the same as yours, unless you decide to do it in the States, then it varies per fill doctor. Also part of what he provides his patients is this forum, this forum is Dr. Ortiz’s forum for his patients, for follow-up and after care – it’s a support system for his patients before and after surgery. All the best, Lisa
  25. Love the post - all the best tomorrow - hope you're enjoying a wonderful meal! (I can't wait till tomorrow's post)! Lisa
