Did my port flip?

Recommended Posts

I went to a Dr here in Maryland since traveling to MX is hard for me to get my first fill today 11/9. I am so upset because they couldnt find my port, they cant even feel it. They think it lost a stitch and flipped around. I am getting an x-ray on Monday. I told them I felt it really good the first few weeks then I couldnt feel it at all so they looked at each other like "yeah it flipped". The only other reason could be because I have a lot of belly fat, but I felt it prior like a rock so this sucks, may have to go back to MX, dont want to, long flight getting my sister to take the baby is a hassle too.

Anyways, praying for the best...until then I am eating a huge porckchop I am soooo pissed.

I will w/b soon

Starting to wonder if this will EVER work..................long sigh

Cher me up...tell me they are wrong...has this happened to you or a friend??

Thanks

Mandy

Hey Mandy, it is Corey your band-mate.

I'd never heard that the port could flip, which is probably for the best since that would be one more thing I'd be paranoid about the first few weeks after the surgery.

Did they use flouro when they were looking for the port? I have heard that when Dr's do a blind fill they can have difficulty finding the port and that can cause problems. Your x-ray will on Mon should give a pretty clear picture if something is amiss. Good luck and hopefully the worst that is happening is that your port is hiding.

Hi Corey,

I was wondering about you. I wanted to stay longer in MX but had to rush home since my son is still an infant and it was a lot for my sister to handle alone. This may be one of my downfalls though because I had to take care of him alone while recovering, I had no choice . I wonder if all the lifting and moving broke a suture lose. I hope I am being a worry wart!!!

No it was a 'blind', but you honestly cannot feel anything there, not even a little bump thats why they were concerned. Maybe its all my belly fat...hopefully the X ray will prove them wrong.

Mandy,

I couldn't feel my port until I had lost a substantial amount of weight. Until my first fill, what I thought I was feeling as my port was actually the scar tissue forming under the larger incision. THey don't place the port right under the incision so scar tissue doesn't form on top of the port.

It has only been in the last few weeks that I can really find my port when I feel for it - and I"m down 50 pounds now.

I hope your port hasn't flipped, that doesn't happen often, but can happen, especially if you were doing too much lifting too soon. Just take a deep breath and wait til Monday. That is the beautyf of having your fills under xray - because even if the port moves around they can usually still see it and do your fill.

If you have any questions about your port, or want a 2nd opinion after you get the xray - please call Dr. Martinez on his cell. If you need that number again, please email me directly :)

Mandy, I have never felt my port. I have tried too. It really is a lot smaller than I expected, and I just can't find it, even after having a fill, and knowing where it is.

I hope things go well for you. I know having a baby at home changes everything. You can't just relax....ever.

Good luck.

Mandy

PS--How do you get these tickers to work?

You can make them on a number of websites and can usually just insert the code into your response or your signature. The other way is to upload the image into a photo hosting place like www.photobucket.com and link from there.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hello I am new here. I am starting my pre-op diet tomorrow for surgery on Dec 21. I am responding to the possible flipped port. I have crohn's disease and I get a remicade infusion. I recently got a port in my right chest area. I began having pain and went back to the doctor only to find via x-ray that my port had flipped over onto its back. So, they manuevered the port with their hand and put an iv in the port to stablize it. I wore an iv for 5 weeks covered by bandages on my chest. So, Friday was the first time since they fixed the port I received my infusion, and it worked well. So, good chances are that they will be able to find and adjust the port and pin it until the tissues adhere to the port, thus securing it.

May God Bless you on your journey to recovery.

I noticed you mentioned having Crohn's Disease. I think I remember the literature saying Crohn's is a top contra-indication for the band.

I do hope you have discussed Crohn's with your surgeon, but just wanted to bring it to your attention if you were not aware. Perhaps it is not an issue for you, as every situation is different.

I do wish you the best.
