Help! Constant thoughts of Death

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! My Band surgery is on Monday. It's Friday and I am almost more nervous about having to ingest only fluids this weekend than I am about the surgery itself! I am almost deathly afraid of not waking up from that table. I pray that I'm NOT speaking that into reality. Does anyone else know what I mean? Just having all kinds of crazy thoughts and I think I'm a very level-headed woman. I am trying to fill my head with ideas of life after recovery and NOT all these other bad things.

HELP!!!

Sheila

OK, you know how sometimes we can just start focusing on something and can’t let it go – looks like you’re doing this with your surgery and no, you’re not the first and no you won’t be the last. I didn’t do this but have read several posts from others who did the same thing that you are doing. And its OK, those thoughts do cross your mind, but you shouldn’t let them take over and make you miserable and fearful.

Here’s the deal, so far, no one has died on Dr. Ortiz’s surgery table, and he has a great record. He does his surgeries so fast, that unless he has to do something else to you, your in and out fast I was done in 15 minutes. But someone else who just posted and only because he had another surgery they had to work around took 3.5 hours. (I think he got the best bang for his buck and I’m kind of jealous…)

So put your mind on vacation, and stop thinking about dying, start thinking about your new healthy you! You’re going in to receive the gift of a lap band – and I don’t care how much we paid for it, it’s still a gift – and you’re going to do amazing things with it. You’re going to use it to get healthy and turn your body into one sexy, bikini loving machine. (I never thought I’d wear one of those again, I did)!! And I’m a baby boomer!

You’re going to be fine – you have a greater chance at dying driving to the grocery store. (Most deadly accidents happen close to our homes) Now are you all freaked out about that? No, of course not!

Now go your mirror and repeat 3 times.

I’m going to be fine

I’m going to be fine

I’m going to be fine

There, done, you’re going to be fine!

Congrats on getting the band – you’re going to have a great time with it!

Dying? NO WAY girlfriend! You are about to start LIVING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Become obsessed with that! :)

I was banded 6 months ago yesterday and I feel better than I have in years! Just imagine the newer and improved version of YOU! That is what I did (I had my fears too) and here I am 6 months down the road, older, yet feeling younger!

You will do great! GOOD LUCK!!!

Lisa and Dana are right! There is nothing to worry about. I was banded 6 months and 2 days ago and I've lost a total of 61lbs thus far! Yeah!! For me, it took Dr. Ortiz 10 minutes to do the hiata hernia and 19 minutes to do the band and VIOLA! I'm done! I came out of recovery close to 10 minutes afterwards and was walking down the hallway, 20 minutes later! Yeah! It's awesome and believe me, you have nothing to worry about.

Remember how you felt about getting the band and how excited about having it done? That elation? That is what you should be feeling right now. You are feeling the 'unknown' of what's going to happen...and that is perfectly normal and expected. Like Lisa says, don't feed into the negative and let your imagination run wild. Afterwards, you are going to wonder why you even thought to be nervous!

Just relax and B-R-E-A-T-H-E! You are truly going to enjoy your journey...just get your mindset on the positives and move forward from there. We are all here for you...and congrats on making the best decision youve ever done for yourself...I know I have!

Best of luck to you and see you on the other side! YEAH!! Jazzy!!
