mymolly
Hi everyone. I was banded on Jan. 19th and according to my doctor, I'm doing good. There are two issues i'm getting conflicting answers about and I thought I'd put it out there. The first one is the protein drinks. Are they a rest of your life thing or do they eventually stop? The second thing is rice. Has anyone had a problem with rice? I've had people say no, it will get stuck in the band and sure why not. I haven't had any yet. I was just wondering. I DON'T DRINK PROTEIN SHAKES, I JUST THINK THEY'RE ALL NASTY AND I DO EAT WHITE, BROWN, FRIED AND MY FAVORITE, BASMATI RICE
Jnlebean
I dont drink protein drinks unless i have no time to take a lunch or breakfast to work, i dont drink them as part of my 'diet'. I love rice, try cooking it with coconut milk instead of water, just use as much coconut milk as you would water, OMG so good.
UTdigiMOM
I drink a protein shake in the am due to being too tight and I like to start my day off with some protein. I found a good tasting canned shake and stick with it. If you're interested it's called Pure Protein and I like the chocolate and cookies and creme flavors. You'll see that with the band comes lots of conflicting advice. We're all so different and that makes it hard to say what works for one person will work for the next. BandDiva
I love protein shakes! I drank them before my surgery! I use a couple brands that are REALLY like milkshakes. I enjoy them and I am getting the protein I need. I have learned how to feel if I am tight, on those days, I have one for breakfast. Otherwise I eat eggs or oatmeal for breakfast. I have a shake in the afternoon instead of snacking. I do eat more protein than what is suggested. I can eat rice, but the only kind I eat is brown rice. Anything like this that can get gummy, you really have to eat super slow. Keep in mind, it will depend on your fill.
Christy26
I drink a shake or just a small chocolate milk in the morning for some protein and calcium. I CAN eat in the mornings if I have worked out in the morning, but its not enjoyable, its still kind of a struggle so I usually dont even bother, but if I try, its usually just some scrambled eggs with some cheese. Smiley
Unless I am on liquids I choose not to do protein shakes because of the extra calories. A sixteen ounce glass of milk between 5:30 and 6:30 am and then a cup of yogurt w/ half a cup of cereal in it around 8:30 or 9 has become my morning routine. When I added protein to the milk I still needed something around 8:30 or 9, so I decided to cut out the extra 110 calories provided by the protein mix. As for the rice, I have not had any for a while, so I cannot speak from personal experience since achieving restriction. I do have a friend with the band who went out for Chinese one night and did perfectly fine with the rice. However, when he ate some of the leftovers the next night the rice came back to haunt him. I was at his house a few days after the incident and when asked where I wanted to go eat dinner I suggested Chinese, even though I knew of his recent issue with the rice. As expected I got one of those looks that could kill and was quickly informed that was not an option. I think tolerance rice, breads and other iffy foods are simply and individual experience, as I can still eat bread of any kind when and if I chose to. mymolly
Thanks for all the input. I was told that the weight loss would be lessened if you didn't have the protein. That was by someone other than the doc. The doc said I might be able to stop. Who the heck knows!

SamanthaW
I do have protein shakes when I am on liquids. Sometimes I have them for breakfast if I am not feeling like cooking oatmeal or eggs. Everyone is different but I have found that any sticky rice is a big no-no for me but most other rices and pastas are fine as long as I take very small bites and chew really well. Tortillas and breads are a no-go for me now. One thing that amazes me is that my husband and I ate teriyaki from a restaurant down the road at least once a week before. The serving is a huge amount of chicken, loads of sauce and 3 big scoops of rice and I would eat the WHOLE thing! I haven't achieved my sweet spot yet but I do have some restriction and it amazes me that I eat less than a scoop of that rice now and not all of the meat. Plus it is saving $ because I am turning what once used to be 1 meal into 2 or 3!
shrty835
I can't get anything solid down before 11 am so I have to drink a protien shake in the morning. As for the rice, I can't eat any kind, wish I could because I love my rice. But I respect my band so if it tells me no I do what it tells me. Myskinny
I had some rice in a soup and my stomach hurt for about 3 hours. I was at the mall so I just walked for a couple of hours. It hurt me. Needless to say I haven't even thought about rice since. Maybe try again in a month or two. Lori
