Hopefully, a little perspective. Most of these numbers are from the CDC's website except where otherwise cited.

Total population of US = 304,059,724 (US Census)

# of Americans who are killed by "normal" influenza each year = 63,001

# of Americans who die of Heart Disease = 652,091

# of Americans who die of Chronic lower respiratory diseases = 130,933

# of Americans who die of "normal" flu and Pneumonia = 63,001

# of American who die of Diabetes = 75,119

# of Americans who die of accidents = 117,809

# of Americans who have confirmed Swine Flu (as of 11 am 4-29-09) = 91

# of Americans who have died from Swine Flu = 1

Total population of Mexico City = 8,836,045 (Wikipedia)

# of Mexico citizens who have confirmed Swine Flu = 26

# of Mexico citizens who have died = 7

All in all 9 countries have reported a collected total of 148 cases of Swine Flu. If we adjust and say that normal flu happens evenly throughout the year (which it doesn't, it tends to occur during certain months or flu season), then roughly 2,100 Americans die from normal flu each month. You're far more likely to die from normal flu at the grocery store than Swine flu.

I suspect one of the reasons it's hitting hard in Mexico City is due to the poor air quality. Mexico City is a very large and densely populated city surrounded by geographical features which encourage air stagnation and is rather known for air pollution, and flu is a disease which attacks the respiratory system.

I think some of those numbers need to be updated....................

I was riding with another patient that brought some face masks. I did not see any masks being distributed.

Thanks Dan-

I saw them handing out masks on TV BUT it wasn't at the border, it was in some town And as of tonight or maybe last night( not sure) the border inspectors were wearing masks but it could be of their choice, not like it's mandatory

things are changing - W.H.O. has it now @ phase 5

I do wish things would start to look better down there... Just for everyones sake

I KEEP HEARING THE WORD PANDEMIC AND WONDERED WHAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THAT AND EPIDEMIC WAS:

PANDEMIC

–adjective

1. (of a disease) prevalent throughout an entire country, continent, or the whole world; epidemic over a large area.

2. general; universal: pandemic fear of atomic war.

–noun

3. a pandemic disease.

EPIDEMIC

adjective

1. Also, epâ‹…iâ‹…demâ‹…iâ‹…cal. (of a disease) affecting many persons at the same time, and spreading from person to person in a locality where the disease is not permanently prevalent.

2. extremely prevalent; widespread.

–noun

3. a temporary prevalence of a disease.

4. a rapid spread or increase in the occurrence of something: an epidemic of riots.

I am planning on being there on May 14th until May 17th for my first fill. When I made the plans for the trip there was no mention of the SF. I did not get the trip cancellation because my last trip to TJ was so good. We decided to stay a few extra days this time, sort of a mini vacation so to speak. I am a bit nervous but I am still going ahead with my plans. It appears that it is getting better there and worse here in the states. Go figure. Hopefully we will be fine and won't bring back anything to friends and family.

I have just returned, tonight, from Tijuana. The situation is really sad. They do not have one confirmed case but everyone is so afraid to go there. The good people of Tijuana are really hurting from the lack of tourists. I live in Calgary, AB, Canada and we have a number of confirmed cases. No one is warning people to not come here. Saying Mexico is unsafe is unfair. We had a wonderful time and never felt we were in danger of getting sick.

I think the big difference is people in your country didn't die, where in Mexico they did....

There could be so many reasons why they died in Mexico. all in all they're dead............ with the economy the way it is adds to it. Meaning things are bad for many people, Even if they were planing to go to Mexico Why take a chance in getting sick when you really shouldn’t be going cause the money is tight these days

Did you hear over in Egypt they slaughtered 300,000 pigs cause of swine flu....

I'm going down on the 19th................. And there are 300 cases here in the states. However I also think People have a better idea of what is going on — it has seemed to peak And there hasn’t been a reported Swine flu death in Mexico in days......... So that's good,

I'm kindda thinking of it as I still have 14 days, And God knows what could happen in that time

As the days pass more facts are coming out - We also know that Tamiflu helps with the recovery, Making it not as bad here for us.... by the end of this week All the fact should be - We'll know for sure.... Here's an article if you care to read
