Question about surgery

Recommended Posts

Good morning, everyone! I have a real quick question about surgery and I'm hoping that *someone* out there can answer me.

I wear extended-wear contacts. Don't even *own* a pair of glasses...well, that's a lie...I have several pairs of 'cheater' glasses, cuz I'm old and I have to wear them for close-up work.

I was told to bring glasses for the surgery; that I wouldn't want to be bothered with contacts. Problem is, since I don't own a pair, it's a little hard for me to do that!

I had sinus surgery two years ago and I kept my contacts in for that without any problems at all. I mean, heck, I'm used to wearing them 24/7 for a week at a time, after all!

Has anyone else had this issue? Did they *really* make you take out your contacts, even if they are extended wear?

I would NOT recommend wearing contacts into surgery for more obvious health reasons.

I'm really surprised you never wear glasses - your eyes do need a rest, even with long wear contacts.

I'm really really shocked that your ophthalmologist hasn't explained the importance of this, for cornea care.

They're not kidding (or 'suggesting') when they say no contacts in surgery.

Why even chance it.

Invest in a cheap pair of glasses.

I did not wear my contacts to the clinic, and wore my glasses as they recommended.

I had knee surgery 12 years ago and about two days after the surgery my eyes resembeled those of a chain smoking alcoholic. I called the doctor and he said I was probably having an allergic reaction to the ointment they put in my eyes during surgery. Personally I would not suggest wearing your contacts during the surgery, but then again I don't even take my glasses with me because I can see almost as well without my glasses or contacts as I can with them. If you absolutely can't get along without them you should at least be prepared to take them out before the surgery and put them back in afterwards.
