On my third week with a broken leg, and I am sooo scared!

Recommended Posts

I broke my leg about 3 weeks ago. I still have another 3 to go before I get my cast off. Sitting around all day is leading to a lot of poor eating habits again. I am scheduled for my third fill in 2 weeks. I am scared! I am terrified to weigh myself, I miss working out. Anyone got any ideas on working out from the couch, lol! I am getting desperate. I started out at 233 lbs, and am now 175! This all since Feb 17, I love my weight loss, and band! I don't want to gain it all back, HELP!!!!!! :lb12:

CJen - I know how you feel about having a fear of gaining some weight back due to an injury. Good thing you have the band! We all will have set backs from time to time. Sounds like you are doing some smart things already, asking for suggestions is a great idea. What comes to my mind right away would be to grab some hand weights and work your arms. If you don't have some hand weights, grab some veggie cans from your cupboard, use those. If you cast doesn't go above your knee. Set on the floor by your couch/chair, put your legs in the chair, feet to the back of the chair and do some crunches. Streching is good to do to. Slow stretches, holding your pose.

I broke my foot a few years back and it was a very difficult time for me. I ended up on cruthces for 6 months and gained a lot of weight back I had lost. Chin up! You are doing great!

Holy Camolli!!! 58 pounds in less than 4 months??? I think that is a record. I've never heard of anyone with a band losing that much that fast. Are you sure you didn't have gastric bypass, haha?! That's great. Obviously you should just keep doing whatever you've been doing (what HAVE you been doing?) and try reading books or magazines while you are stuck at home. It's very difficult to eat while you are turning pages, much easier while watching tv- anything to keep those hands busy.

Totally agree with Angie. If you have either hand weights, toning bands, or just cans so some arm exercises. Also, I now for me just walking around on my crutches was quite a workout! :) So walk around your house or outside if you can. i bet if you google it there are quite a few great exercises out there.

Also, find ways to keep yourself busy. I know the week I was on vacation my head hunger killed me! Not sure if you like sudoku, crossword, knitting or anything like that to keep you busy. As odd as it might sound, I love lottery scratcher tickets! So I buy the ones like the bingo ones and crossword ones that take a while to do. I have a 3 year old niece that lives with me part time and we color and I love it! Very theraputic! :)

Good luck!

As previously suggested, now is absolutely the time to tone up those arms.

If you can drive or have someone to drive you, here are my suggestions.

1. Get a good book and spend the day at the park reading.

2. Volunteer at a local hospital to rock babies. I live in KC and from what I understand the local children's hospital is always looking for people to help with this.

3. Go to a nursing home and visit with people. It doesn't matter if you know them or not, so many of them are lonely and will talk to you as if they have known you all their life.

4. Go to the local dollar theatre. Movies show all day long, just take your own popcorn and drink.

5. Volunteer to fold clothes at a local clothes closet.

There are a lot of other things that you could do, I just can't think of them right now. Volunteer opportunities abound and most places would be thrilled to have your help if even for a few weeks.

OK this may sound cheesy but I find a great way to pass time and keep from eating is knitting. If you don't know how it really isn't difficult to learn, I learned from a book I got a Walmart that had pictures etc. When I had the time I would sit in and watch TV and knit scarves and cotton dish clothes as gifts for friends and family, it's actually what helped me survive my 3 weeks post op.

Good luck.

Hey Louise!

I was knitting at the OCC waiting for my daughter to finish with her teeth whitening and talking with the dentist. I'm getting ready to start a duster sweater for this winter (when it actually gets cool enough to wear a sweater here in FL). It is great therapy and a wonderful way to pass time productively.

Yeah for knitters. I actually am not proficient enough to knit a sweater. I don't have the attention span to follow any complicated patterns but I do find it is relaxing to sit and knit. Unfortunately now I don't have time and I don't have cable to be able to watch TV at the same time. I once saw a women on a stairclimber either knitting or crocheting while she worked out. That's dedication!

I am not really sure what I am doing differently than all of you thers. I did lose about 10-15 lbs(not sure, because I couldn't weigh myself for a week) in the hospital from not being able to eat, due to the pain killers. Other than that I just do what I have been told, small portions! Also exercise! I have tried reading, which I normally love, but can't seem to concentrate much. I am however gonna go buy weights today....

Thank you for the advice!
