Pounds VS Inches

Good Morning All,

Well, I wanted to re-post what I put on the Wednesday Weigh-in as a special note to Carrie and others, because I felt like I had a profound moment.

So here goes:

Losing inches are very important. It is not always about the number on the scale. I am very confident about that because, and here is why, in my opinion, I have lost roughly about 25-26 pounds since we started this Wednesday weigh-in back in the end of September.

In clothes, it used to be for every 15-20 pounds of weight-loss, I would go down a size. Well, I have gone from a size 12-10 in September/October to a size 4 now. My estimates in weight-loss numbers should have me at about a size 8, not a 4. I know I have lost quite a bit in inches since we started this. It is not always about the scale, as most of us have seen.

And for anyone who is worried that the scale is not moving, but your clothes are looser, YOU are doing PHENOMENAL!

Don't doubt yourself.

Remember, muscle weighs MORE than fat, heck, I have to remember that too.

Kristy it is SO funny how you posted this and I think you are CORRECT!!!. Hubby and I were discussing this last night. The number on the scale does not seem to move for me much, however since starting back "hard" working out with him two weeks ago, I know I am loosing inches. This week I have looked at the tags in my pants twice to make sure I did not get them mixed up with my size 12 jeans because my size 10 Jeans are getting loose in the hips and butt and these are starched! My starched Jeans ALWAYS fit tight when I put them on, not this week at all!! Yeahhh for Inches!!! LOL

Us dieters always hear this thing about muscle weighing more than fat. Well a pound of fat doesn't weigh more than a pound of muscle, they both weigh a pound. The difference is, a pound of fat looks worse on you than a pound of muscle. Fat takes up more room than muscle, so it is more about how it looks than how much it weighs.

The only reason I bring this up is because it is one of those weight loss myths that everyone hears. It isn't really a myth per se, but it is being taught to everyone incorrectly. Here, check out this website! http://www.onemorebite-weightloss.com/muscle-to-fat.html

But you are right, we should definitely look at inches not just how much we weigh, because that isn't the whole story!

I am a nutrition major, so I do know that a pound of muscle is the same as a pound of fat in weight. :)

So that link is wonderful, because it shows others that the 5 pound of muscle is pretty close to 3X smaller than 5 pounds of fat. This is exactly what I meant. Great job!

I just could kiss you right now! My self-esteem really needed this post right NOW. I beat myself up for that number not going anywhere for the last 28 days and I know my clothes are so much looser and when I look in the mirror I see the inches coming off but for me the number not changing is so dicouraging.

Kristi, Thank you so much for posting this. You are exactly right. I am new to band land, only 22 days old and I am becoming obsessed with the scale. NOT GOOD! If I'm not careful it dictates my mood and self esteem. I am on the Wed. weight in's and I am going to start back doing just that, only weighing in on Wednesday's. Sunday I got into a pair of jeans (without and elastic band) that has not seen the light of day in quite a while. When I got those puppies zipped it was an amazing feeling. Now that's what it's all about!! Thanks again for the kick in the pants to stop focusing on the scales.

janellody, thanks for the site....I think! WoW, what a eyeopener. Now that makes more sense. You could have warned me - before I was grossed out. Baahahaaa Although, now I realize why my butt looks like it does. Baahahaha Thanks, great info.

Great post!!!! I LOVE it. I feel the same way. Haven't lost a whole lot in the last couple of months, but my clothes are getting looser and looser. I know once I really start to work out that will make a difference as well. It does get discouraging when you don't see the scale moving downward like we all like. That made my day as well!

I am just at the start of this journey and I was a bit frustrated about how slow things have been since I started eating solids, but then I thought.... well at least the scale is going in the right direction and I am wearing clothes I haven't worn in 2 years. That is always going to be a win!

Bogiesmom, Don't be discouraged. Seeing the scale not move can be frustrating, I know that as well as anybody else. Just need to remember that every now and then. You are doing great, out little Bandita.

Amy, Focusing on the scale is very hard to do. I think I weighed myself the first 2 months straight and I swear it was starting to drive me a bit mad. Then a very wise woman :D, challenged me to stop the madness and the scale addiction. I can't say it is always easy, but now I try my best to only weigh in on Wednesdays.
