Newbie Questions

Recommended Posts

I just got banded on Monday and have a few questions that I hope to get answers about:

1. Is tomato juice or Clamato juice an acceptable juice to drink during the first two weeks?

2. My incision sites are real itchy and tender. Is it okay to rub some cream on them (maybe Vitamin E cream)?

3. Did anyone else have serious gas the first few days? What can I do about it?

4. How did everyone get fiber during the first two weeks?

Happy to be a new member of the group.

Greetings,

I got banded two Friday's ago, and I still get gas...gasex has helped a lot...I found some of the liquids were giving me the gas. Soy products such as found in the protein shakes for instance. I believe all juice is OK as long as you water it down. I used V8 infusion and added water...I am now on to soups and have found that some of those will give me gas as well. Not sure about your incisions..mine didn't bother me much but I did use light oil after the second week when I showered..hopefully other will add their comments too...everyone on this site is really helpful.

I just got banded on Monday and have a few questions that I hope to get answers about:

1. Is tomato juice or Clamato juice an acceptable juice to drink during the first two weeks? Not until you are on "full liquids". For the first like 7 days or so, you are on clear liquids only such as broth, juice, vitamin water, etc. Check your paperwork you got from Dr. Miranda, it has all the answers.

2. My incision sites are real itchy and tender. Is it okay to rub some cream on them (maybe Vitamin E cream)? Dunno, I just left it all alone, call OCC and ask them to be sure.

3. Did anyone else have serious gas the first few days? What can I do about it? Yes, and the best thing to do is walk around. Everytime I felt it I got up and walked around and then had a serious burp. This helped the gas go away within a couple weeks and I never got the shoulder pain.

4. How did everyone get fiber during the first two weeks? I probably didn't get any. But I think you can take some kind of fiber supplement... Dr. Miranda can help you with this.

1. I believe it's CLEAR liquids for the first 2 weeks AFTER surgery. Clamato and/or tomato juice is a no-no.

As a side note, you may find it gives you heart burn. You'll want to avoid anything spicy after surgery, for at least a few weeks until you figure out what you can get away with. I know I had terrible heart burn, and was very sensitive to a lot post surgery.

It also doesn't have much in the way of nutritional value, so I'm aim for something a bit higher in protein, to help with your energy levels.

2. Itchy incision = it's healing. It's just fine to use Vit E on it. That will help with the scar, as well.

3. I had BAD BAD heart burn & gas. I found GasX strips worked, and ended up taking something for the horrible/severe heart burn, which really only lasted a few weeks.

To help with gas, keep movin' - you'll find walking helps a lot.

5. Powder fibre supp to clear liquid.

Hope this helps! :)

Thanks for the responses. I'm feeling better now than yesterday but the gas still is a significant problem. Glad to hear it will get better, I will drink lots of water today and take a few long walks.

Congratulations on your weight loss - very impressive. I hope I can do as well.

Congrats and welcome to "Band Land".

1. Clear liquids - I wouldn't think Clamato and/or tomato juice would be the best right now.

2. Itchy incision - Man, I remember that, mine itched like crazy. I did call OCC about

that... they told me not to put anything on them until the glue came off...by itself.

3. Heart burn & gas - Gas X and walk, walk, walk!

4. Fiber - Please call Dr. Miranda, I have seen several different things. I was advised

not to take fiber during that phase.

Hang in there....it gets easier as you go. Keep asking questions, we are all here to help each other!

Oh you will!

Just give your body a few months to recover. and remember that your fills (&restriction) will probably be done in little steps.. that was the most frustrating part - tiny little fills, and i barely had any restriction for the first year or so.

But it was a blessing in disguise, as it forced me to really work on the psychological aspect behind my over eating.

Make sure you keep me posted on your progress! :)
