Going to OCC for fills or stay in the U.S.

Recommended Posts

So I'll be needing my first fill soon. I'm kind of stuck on whether or not to go back down to OCC or to just go to a place around here (tacoma wa). It is a little more to go to OCC which I dont mind but I'm just worried about going do there and then coming back and needing a another fill soon after. I have been looking at how some people get fills like a week apart or unfills so I'm stuck on what I should do because I have heard people have better luck when going down to OCC but I dont want to pay to go all the way down there and then needing to get one up here soon after any advice.

Do

I personally have kick butt aftercare where I live so I stick close to home. I like the assurance of having local care in case of an emergency.....I would hate to be spitting my spit in a cup for a days worth of travel if my band slammed shut on me for any reason. Now that I said that, if I had an emergency that called for surgery of any kind, I would get my tooshie on a plain to the OCC. Better believe it!

For me local fit my life and I was blessed to have a great team of surgeons here that took me on even though I was a Mexican banded patient.

Do what is best for you.

So much depends on whether you can find a good fill Dr. Where I live, the bariatric surgeons all seem to have an attitude about patients who took the 'medical tourism' route. I was denied by insurance so had no choice, but the only fill I could get locally was not done w/a flouroscope and that is an absolute must. There are too many horror stories about punctured ports from blind fills. I had my surgery 3/18 and my first fill 5/1 at OCC, and I had to travel 3000 miles to get there - for me, it was worth it to know I am in good hands. The alternative cost of a punctured port or slipped band is not worth it. I made a long weekend out of it and enjoyed the mini-vacation! Plus, Dr. So at OCC is awesome - you can watch the whole procedure, he explains everything, is meticulous, and *almost* painless. I plan to go back for my second fill in about 6 weeks.
