what do you do when food gets stuck?

Kay you need to slooooooooooooooooooow down. That's about as simple as it gets. Sometimes that is tough, I know for a fact. I was a single mom for 15 years and I was always on the run.

Here are some tips (that have worked for "me") that might help in an emergency:

1. When eating out, always know where the restroom is. You might need to visit it. Don't be embarrassed.

2. Keep a roll of paper towels in the car. It's helped me out before. Might want to keep a plastic sack too.

3. Know that the 2 words "excuse me" will be a huge part of your vocabulary. :D

Best of luck with your new band!

I had my first episode of food getting stuck this morning. I grabbed one of those little danish pastries that were at my motel for the 'continental' breakfast as I was checking out. I tore a bite off with my mouth, and, without thinking, let it slide down without chewing. WOW!!!!!!

This was the first time I had any feeling of having the band inside me, and it felt like someone had a hand in my abdomen, twisting my stomach around! It was a sensation of discomfort I have never felt. Fortunately, I was near the juice machine, and I quickly got an OJ and washed the piece down. I am not sure if a piece of meat or any other firm food would have washed down so easily, so it was a reminder of the need to chew, chew, chew.

I have not PB'd or 'slimed' thus far, so getting food stuck was my first side effect. I do not know what would have occurred had the piece not washed through.

well, my band showed me who's boss this morning! :P i have only been able to drink in the mornings because my band always feels tight... but this morning i had the bright idea to eat. i ate merely 3/4 of a crunchy breakfast taquito (about the thickness of a fat crayola marker) and it got stuck. i did it right... chewed and chewed and only took small bites but began to have the chest pain associated with that stuck feeling. i then vomited, or 'PBd', not once but 3 times just to get that minimal amount of food up. yuck! not sure what is going on with that because i have no problem at all eating small portions for lunch or dinner. this isn't the first i've had foods "stick" but it's the first time it came back up like that! in my experience, greg, when i have foods stick drinking only makes it worse. i just have to wait for it to go down -- or, like today, come back up! i think i'll stick with drinkable fat-free yogurt or a slim fast for breakfast for a while!

Many bandsters report "tightness" in the morning. Most with this side effect drink a protein shake for breakfast. I recommend Adkins Strawberry or Vanilla. Slim-Fast, at least for me, has too many carbs. The Adkins also helps you get your daily protein intake.

Best wishes!

Its not uncommon to have more restriction in the morning. Not sure why, but it happens. Some bandsters find drinking a warm liquid prior to trying to eat helps. I'm so busy in the morning and I do have more restriction in the morning that I find I do better with a protein shake. I don't have time to sit and eat slowly (3 kids... different schools!) so I take a protein shake with me when I'm dropping them off. On the weekends, when I have more time (ok... really just on Saturday morning) I have real food. Just know - PBing and throwing up don't HAVE to be part of your band life, its not uncommon, but it can be avoided by eating slowly, chewing well and taking only small bites. Almost 6 months banded here and no PBing... yet LOL

  • 4 weeks later...
PB'ing means Productive Burping. It's like throwing up but not quite as harsh (at least is my experience). It happens when food is unable to get pasts the band and then it only has one way left to go.

OK, well another newbie question here....what does sliming mean?

Thanks,

Donna

Not so sure on this one but I think sliming refers to a large amount of saliva being produced in the mouth in preparation of vomiting and/or a large amount of mucus being produced in the stomach in reaction to food getting stuck down there.
