bandid
I am hoping to have my band placed later this year. I just got the book by Dr. Ortiz and I think it is the chapter by Dr. Grossman that says "avoid vomiting at all costs" How? The funny thing is I read that part of the book and woke up with a stomach virus the next day!. And then today, the first day I feel like being up at all I find the old post by "the ranter" about her friend that was dying because of vomiting. I wish there was more information in the post, I would be surprized that even the "Exerocist vomiting" I did yesterday morning could cause that kind of problem. My questions are: If you do throw up, should you see the Dr. just in case? What are the Signs and Symptoms of Slippage? Didn't I read that slippage was 3% of surgeries, and isn't it corrcectible in most cases without removing the band? I know that this is a gross topic, but it is something we will all face. I must have gotten this bug from a co-worker and now I am a little concerned, not enough to say I'm not having the surgery, but maybe just now the possible complications have become real to me. I have another question. I take vitamins and supplements, and you know how big calcium pills are. Will I be able to take them or will I have to switch to liquid? Although by the time I'm not paying $2500 a year for prescriptions (please, please, please) I suppose I could afford them. Thanks, Susan
Clynn
From what I understand, if you have a slip, it's pretty obvious. One girl described it as feeling instantly sick to her stomach and unable to keep any liquids down. Vomiting can cause a slip but I'm told if you contact your physician they can give you something to have on hand which will suppress vomiting in case you get food poisoning or the stomach flu. I'm heading into my doc tomorrow and will try very hard to remember to ask (unlike my last several visits). I'll let you know what he says. BSN
Thanks, I just thought it was funny when I read avoid vomithing at all costs. Like you can. It is something I am going to ask my doctor at my 1st appt.Susan I have an unusual inflammatory thing going on and the end result is that I was barfing a LOT right after surgery. Not as much now, but then I was. That was four days after being banded. My band didn't budge. A band slipping is possible but not likely. If it does slip there is disagreement about how to fix it. My doc (Alberto Aceves) puts his patients on clear liquids for two weeks (if possible) and sometimes it will go back into place that way. Next step is endoscopy. Final option is surgical repair to replace the slipped band. In the case of food poisoning a doc won't give you something to stop vomiting altogether unless it has gotten out of hand. The body is doing a job by getting the toxins and poisons out in the case of food poisoning. If the band is placed appropriately it isn't typically a problem unless things get really out of hand. Also, keep in mind that right after surgery is when you are the most likely to have your band slip. There are very few sutures holding the band in place. It isn't the sutures that hold the band long term, it is the adhesions (scarring) that holds it firmly in place. That is why it is more critical to not barf immediately after surgery. NinnyEd
I got the flu bug that was going around here just 3 weeks after my surgery. I immediately called my PHP the instant I felt any nausea and she gave a script for and anti-nauseal medication that worked great, not one inicident. She told me to just keep it on hand just in case I need it again. Slippage is not super common, but it does happen and, from what I understand, you KNOW when there is a problem. I try and not worry about it. I took the small chance of a bad reaction to loose my weight. I would rather take the chance than to have the the heart problems/high blood pressure/diabetes that is waiting to jump me as I get older like it did the rest of my family! I have watched BOTH of my parents go through hell the past 5 years with weight related health issues, I do not want my kids to have to watch me in that state when I get to be in my 70's. As for vitamins.. I take liquid Centrum, the taste is not too bad.... Calcium, you could either cut the pills smaller or take the chewable kind. I couldn't get liquid vitamins down if I tried... they taste just like they smell. Gahhh
cleo6666
Has anyone check out V8 juice? It's loaded with vitamins but also with sodium. I'm not saying to take this in place of, but if you don't really like veggies (I don't) it's nice to think you are getting some. Also, I was recommended to take a "whole food" vitamin instead of something like centrum. These are available in Health food stores. I'm not expert, but what I understand is that they are made from whole foods and they are supposed to apsorb into your system better. Negitive thing with mine are they are like huge horse pills. I take them in the morning on an empty stomach with water. I burp a bit after, but it always stays down. When I go into my vitamin/smoothie shop I enjoy talking to the people who work there. I told them about my band and they are very cooperative and nonjudgemental (yes they are all thinnies :-) I like that they discuss nutritional needs with me because with my lack of eating, I'm sure my body is missing so many of the nutrients it needs. I actually found a liquid vitamin right after my surgery that I took for a week that actually tasted good. It looked disgusting, like liquid spinach, but it tasted like fruit. Anyone try Aloe Vera Juice? I found this new product that was just intoduced in WA called AloCure that should be out on the market soon. If you are having troubles "going"...this helps. I like it better than laxitives because I don't get cramps. Taste good at first but yikes...the after taste needs some help. The bottle looks like a bottle of vodka though. I get funny looks in the lunchroom when I chug it out of the bottle. Hahaha. Ok, enough of my ranting. TGIF! M :-h

Viactiv calcium chew would probably be best to get that extra calcium us women need.

Clynn
Yup I remembered. He wrote me out a prescription for something called promethazine hydrochloride. He said it would suppress vomiting and make me nice and sleepy so I could just doze through the ickyness. It is a suppository so I'm supposed to double ziplock bag it, stick it in the fridge, LIE to my dinner guests when they ask what it is, and it will last for quite a while and be there should I need it. It is something I am going to ask my doctor at my 1st appt.Susan Hi Susan, just to let you know, you can avoid this at all costs.. I havent vomited in almost 40 yrs. I happen to be a person who has a phobia of vomiting, called emetophobia.. yup there are a bunch of us out there. So, you can see where my delima would lie in the choice to get banded. I have on hand Zophran, which is an anti emetic that works very well. Pricey tho. I guess me biggest fear now would be slippage. How else besides vomiting would this happen?? Thanks Geri
