stuck food??

Recommended Posts

I am just out of the box- Surgery date 12-19-06- on week 5 & have been having a feeling of

a dull ache or heaviness in my chest. I thought it was because I had moist roast one night at

dinner & then ham the next. I bought some papaya enzymes and chewed thoroughly, but tonite

it (the ache) came back. As I thought about what could be the problem I realized that I have been

taking vitamin c and zinc 2-3x daily for 4 to 5 days - to help with healing my incision sites due to the fact that I am a slow healer. I usually have scrambled eggs in am, fish or chicken with very

soft (well-steamed veggies), and have beans occas. Liquids and solids-all food goes down without

any difficulty -but I can feel the food and sometimes the liquid pass this spot in my throat that seems like food (or pills) are at this place. I have been taking the pills whole due to the fact I

haven't had my first fill and now I'm freaking out - thinking what have I done to myself!!! My

surgery was in Mexico and I haven't started the process of getting passport yet & I'm in the

Panhandle of Texas with approx. 8 inches of snowfall on the ground today!!!! I would greatly

appreciate some input from others as I'm not sure where to go from here- I will call my doc tomorrow am and of course immediately stop the pills!!! Thanks Smarie :((

Hi, I'm new to this experience too, having just had my surgery on 12/12. I've had the same feeling a few times myself, each time it was when I had eaten something (usually meat) without chewing well enough, or eating too quickly. Old habits are hard to break, and I keep having to remind myself to eat VERY slowly and CHEW lots! Dr. Ortiz's book addressed this and it said that when this happens, you should stop eating right then and wait until your next meal. I've found that if I stop that meal and sip water slowly for a while, it seems to wash down the stuck food and then I'm fine, but I don't push it and try to eat more for several hours afterwards. I don't have much restriction yet, as I haven't had my first fill, but I did eat a meal that was nearly a normal size portion once and found that I was quite uncomfortable for a couple hours after that, so I'm keeping my portions pretty small, which is the point of the surgery afterall. As long as I follow these guidelines, I haven't had any problems eating whatever I've wanted to. Keep us posted on what the doctor says.

Good Luck! Kim

Thanks, Kim I pretty much sipped water for several hours and took maalox and this morning the

feeling is much better. I will Definitely Chew, Chew & Chew & NO MORE PILLS - even without a fill!

I am 4 months post-op and in the beginning I experienced exactly what you have described. I am extremely paranoid about damaging the band and freaked out, lol. I was told by my band aftercare physician that feeling soreness or a dull ache is normal, even after 4-5 weeks you are still healing and at that point you are only just really getting into solids. The solids can irritate the healing pouch/stoma and that can lead to soreness. After 8 weeks or so that weird heaviness stopped. Periodically I will eat something that irritates the stoma and the ache will return, when it does I will go to mushies for the day and will be fine the next. I have had an upper GI at my request (did I mention I am paranoid?? :)) and everything is still perfectly in place.

I still take all my vitamins and meds but after getting a couple stuck (horrible feeling!) I crush them or find it in a liquid. GNC carries everything you mentioned in a liquid form, not everything has a plesant taste but it is well worth it.

Okay, not sure why you need the passport. Driving into and coming out of Mexico walking or driving does not require a passport. I have yet to be asked for mine and I have even been down this year. The passport law is only for flying into Mexico and flying out of Mexico.

For me personally, if I get food stuck water is the worse thing. Causes me extreme pain. I usually try to walk it off or make myself burp, or the dreaded puke.
