Just got banded

Recommended Posts

I got banded yesterday and I just got home from the hospital today after an overnight stay. I stopped at Sams club on the way home to get some chewable vitamins and whatnot and while I was there they had a sale on a fish called Talapia, I bought some after trying a small piece, it was very moist and tasty, (about half the size of a Macdonald's French fry) and almost immediately after I became nauseous and almost threw up. I chewed it till it as mush and figured it would be ok. I am still having chest pain and no appetite like 6 or 7 hours later. Is this normal? My Doc told me I could have anything that could slide off a spoon so I thought fish mush would be ok but obviously I need to wait longer.

If this is a blockage would I still be able to drink plenty because I can. Or am I just still real sensitive due to the surgery? All I had today (besides the bite of fish) was about 4 teaspoons of oatmeal for breakfast and some broth for lunch.

I have been having weird little burps as well. I used to be able to burp on command but now its kinda difficult and painful.

Any tips on what to eat and avoid as well as general information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Wow, already trying fish the day after surgery? I'm getting banded on July 18th and have read so much about what we cannot eat once we are out of surgery. From my understanding we are on a very light liquids to soups towards the end of the 2 weeks AFTER surgery. I would go on your instincts and from what it seems your body is so not ready for even very chewed up fish. I would be extremely scared to even try food until about 2 wks after surgery. I know everybody's body is very different but I wouldn't try food again if I were you...I would assume it would continue to be painful. Your body has had surgery less and 36 hours ago...I would stick 2 liquids. Good luck and congrats on a successful surgery. ;)

Hey there,

Just like Mikey said...I would be extremely leery of actually eating solid food at this stage (as mushy as the fish was...it's still too heavy for you). Stick to your liquids. Stay hydrated and comfortable. The last thing you want to do is cause needless irritation to your tummy.

Stick that fish in the freezer and give your body time to heal. Good luck to you and congratulations on your surgery!

Take care,

Lili

Ok, I will stick with the liquids. I was just going by what my surgeon said, "if it can slide off a spoon you can have it" I figured fish mush would work.... My bad :(

So, what if I ran some chicken salad through a blender? any other recommendations for meals?

I am feeling a little better this morning. Most of my discomfort is just at the port site and I finally passed gas for the first time (gigantic) and that seemed to relieve some of the discomfort, but I am still constipated, gonna take something for that as soon as the store opens. (Turns out I was supposed to be up and walking 2 hours after the surgery but the nurses let me sleep for like 6)

Thanks.

P.S. How do you know if you slip your band?

WHEN I WAS BANDED, I HEARD THIS STORY ABOUT A GAL THAT JUST GOT BANDED AND HAD IT SLIP WITHIN DAYS. I HAD THOUGHT MAYBE IT HAD HAPPENED YEARS AGO OR THEY WERE JUST TRYING TO SCARE US LOL BUT IT HAD JUST HAPPENED A FEW DAYS BEFORE I WAS BANDED. HERE'S A LINK TO HER POST:

I am looking at my instructions as I'm typing

First week should be clear liquids, that would be clear broth, tea, gatorade, fruit juice (without pulp).

Day 8 - add nonfat drinkable yogurt (no fruit pieces)

Day 10 Add liquid protein.

up to day 21 If you can't drink it - don't eat it. I added soups into this group, like a cream of tomato, no chunks.

fourth week Solid Meals.

I followed this faithfully and had no problems at all. I felt like I could eat, but didn't want to take the chance and really wasn't hungry so I stayed right with the diet.

I wasn't taking any chances on any problems. Hope everything works out for you.
