I am stressing so badly that it makes me want to cry!

Recommended Posts

If anyone read my post about protein shakes causing constipation, you might know or not know the answer, but I only got one reply and it has made me stress badly. The answer was that soy protein(which is pretty much in every high protein food or shake), can cause constipation. That is something I don't need since I struggle enough with the big C usually.

Now, can someone please tell me WHAT I do now? I don't want to start losing hair and so on because of not enough protein in my diet, especially after I get my fills and have restriction. I thought about the Special K protein water, but #1, it has alot of sugar, and #2, it has only 5mg of protein. What a waste of money and it is not enough protein for the daily amount I need every day. I love chicken, but after getting a fill, will I be able to eat enough to fulfill my protein intake?

I hope someone could please help me, I would so appreciate it. ;)

Peace,

Judy

There are several soy-free vegetable protein powders. Naturade is one brand of them. You can go to any healthfood store and they can help you find a protein powder that is soy-free. Dairy foods, such as cheese, yogurt and milk are a good source of protein as are eggs. In fact, Egglands Best eggs are a staple of my diet. They now even have boiled, peeled eggs in a resealable bag, which makes it so easy to grab one in the morning to tuck away for lunch at work.

When things come to a stand still, I use the Walmart brand, "Equate" fiber therapy caps. Or the fiber caps Dr. Maranda recommended you take when you got hungry on the pre surgery diet. A couple here and a couple there, pretty soon things will get moving. LOL. That's what works for me.

I have the same exact issue. Keep up with the protein shakes... and get this tea its called SMOOTH MOVE. Take at night and it will hel pget things going without having to give up your protein. Hope that helped.

I've always had problems with constipation due to medication that I am on. A friend told me about Smooth Move about 6 years ago and I got it - it really does work great and tastes okay too, I use a little sweet and lo in it, but definitely works.

"Will I be able to eat enough to fulfill my protein intake?"

Dreamy,

that's really the question and yes you should be able to get enough protein from food, not shakes. It sounds like the shakes are a bigger problem than help. If you're back on regular food after the liquid stage, it's best to avoid the shakes if you can, they won't keep you satisfied as long. You should be able to get enough lean protein and vegetables daily in your meals to meet your nutritional needs. Limit the shakes unless your are having a difficult time. I avoided them altogether, I'd rather blend a can of soup or eat brocolli than most of the shakes out there.

What you need is more fiber. I found the Benefiber powder (cheapest at Costo) will mix with anything and is tasteless.

I mix a few spoons with a cup of non-fat, sugar free yogurt (any flavor), and you can get 9-10 grams of protein and 3-5 of fiber for 110 cals.

But certainly don't despair, you'll find most foods work for you, even after a fill.

Best of luck,

Roger

I have always looked for whey protein as soy protein causes me to become very gassy... Not good at all! It is easy to find, just go to any health food store. I like the taste of EAS whey protein powder... I usually buy vanilla and flavor it with whatever I want... strawberries, banana... if I am feeling naughty chocolate syrup...

My favorite protein shake recipe... 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1/2 cup water or milk or soy milk, and 1 individual container of sugar-free Jello pudding (the premade stuff) - You can make it in any flavor the pudding comes in!

Don't sweat it... I have been banded 8 months and can eat anything I want, just in much smaller amounts....

Good Luck!

I use whey protein (elite brand they make it in 10 different flavors & its sooo good!) I was banded june 26th & haven't had a problem since! I asked Dr. Miranda about protein shakes after off liquids & she said she would rather I eat the bars because the shakes slip through the band, so keep that in mind!
