I know there are new rules now and it said if traveling by land you need a drivers license and your birth cert.. Just wanting to make sure cause I dont have a passport yet. Stacy Hi Stacy, I think you don't need a passport until Jan. 08. Until than drivers licnse and birth cert is ok. You only need them comming from Mexico. I hope this helps. snowbird Posted October 9, 2007 Report Share Posted October 9, 2007 No, to re-enter the US by car (or OCC van) you do not need a passport. Right now that is set to change in January 2008, Homeland Security is still trying to figure out if they are delaying it or not. If you are planning on a fill in TJ after the first of the year, it would probably be a good idea to apply for a passport if you don't have one now. You can check this link: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html to verify this info and keep an eye on changes to the regulations. I was hearing that the Mexican government was saying they were going to demand to see passports, but since the last couple of times I have crossed the border they haven't even had anyone at the border to check anything, I doubt this is happening.
