Band done is US

Recommended Posts

I am reading where many of you had lap band done in Mexico. I guess it must of been a lot cheaper. I had mine done in Little Rock, Arkansas by Dr. Wellborn. Cost 14,200. I did not feel I had a choice in the surgery as I was diabetic, high blood pressure.

Most of us here had the band done by Dr Ortiz in at his clinic in Tijuana. This forum is on his clinic's website, so if you click on "Obesity Control Center" logo in the upper corner you will go to the home page of his site.

Dr. Ortiz trained many of the surgeons operating in the US and is an international expert on the band. While it was cheaper to go to his clinic rather than have the surgery done in the US (usually $8500 with Dr Ortiz) my husband and I, who have insurance coverage for the surgery, went to him due to his expertise and the outstanding qualities of his clinic.

Isnt follow up problematic?

There are no fill clinics near me... and I have contacted local bariatric surgeons and the wait for a fill if you have had one done in mexico is over 6 months

Just all depends on where you are. I've gone to two clinics around here for fills. One of them them I made the appointment a month ahead, the other one the attitude was more just come in whenever.

Dear Suzie,

It doesn't matter where you got the lapband. What matters is that you made a choice to get healthy. You did do ithe procedure? When? I know the "where." This is a great support group, although I have a great group of girl friends that are supporting me. Anyway, it was because of this website that I was able to decide that it could be safe outside the country. I still feel like I am taking a chance. BUt it is work it.

So I suppose you have that nice southern accent. I have a friend from there....anyway, are you feeling better? I have a friend who is both diabetc and has High blood pressure. Yikes! I am so thankful not to be there, but that is the reason I am going to get this done. November 16th. I want to avoid the health problems. I have started the liquid protein diet and lost 5 lbs so far. I am paying for the surgery myself, insurance won't pay. I am worth it and lucky for me, I have a loan already and just enough for the surgery.

Take care, Shanny B)

Hello Shanny,

I did not realize this web site came from Dr. Oriz. I am glad I found one though. As you said it does not matter where it was done. I did not even know about Dr. Oriz. My friend had it done in Little Rock and I watched her progress and that is why I went there. I was also self pay as my insurance would not cover it either. I am 5 weeks post op and go for my first support group session today. It was supposed to be 2 weeks after surgery but I had to reschedule. I am very excited about meeting other lap band patients. This has been a wonderful experience for me. I have lost 22 lbs. and feel so much better than before surgery.
