mel1
Hi there, My husband is considering heading down to TJ for the lap band surgery. I'm not sure I can get time off work and am concerned about him heading there on his own. If anyone can share their experience and if they would have felt comfortable going for this surgery on their own I'd appreciate it. I just want to have a better idea of what to expect. Also, how can you check a doctor or facility out that is in Mexico if you wanted to verify a license, complaints, etc. Thanks!
pacificnw
You can't go wrong with Dr. Ortiz and the clinic in TJ. Several people in my group went alone and did just fine. The driver picks patients up at the airport, you have a ride to and from the clinic and then back to the airport. I had surgery on Monday and flew home on Weds and did very well. And if you check out this clinic, you won't find a better group of doctors. The day after surgery 3 of us rented a taxi and had him take us to the beach, where we walked for an hour. I went with a friend but we quickly befriended someone who had come alone. He'll be fine there on his own. PS I am returning to TJ for my first fill in early Dec. I'll let you know how it went! snowbird
Don't know how to check licenses, etc. For complaints and customer satisfaction, you can look at this website for Dr Ortiz, and also check the website lapbandtalk.com for other doctors in Mexico and in the US. My opinion is that yes, he can go alone if it is difficult for you to go with him. My husband and I were banded by Dr Ortiz, and his fee includes van transportation from the San Diego airport to his clinic in Tijuana for pre-op testing, a ride to the hotel, the hotel room, a ride back to the clinic in the morning, the surgery the second day, that night in the clinic, a ride back to the hotel the day after surgery and another night in the hotel, and then a ride back to the San Diego airport the following day. Just tell him to pack light so he doesn't have to wrestle with much luggage at the airport, and he will be fine. There will be other patients around for moral support if he needs or wants it, and the clinic staff and hotel staff will take care of anything else he needs. Generally speaking, the surgery is not that invasive that he will need assistance at any point in his trip other than immediately after the surgery, and the clinic will take care of that. I was up and walking a couple hours after leaving the OR, and did a lot of walking around the hotel and the airport by the day I left, with no problems. If you are there at the airport to pick him up (I would advise against driving so soon after the anaesthetic) he should be perfectly okay.

I went to Dr. Ortiz by myself for this surgery and everything went great. The driver picked me up at the SanDiego airport and even walked me to the front desk when we got to the clinic. Had pre-op and surgery that day, spent the night at the clinic, they then drove me to the nice Lucerna Hotel w/ very friendly and helpful staff both at the clinic and hotel where I stayed 2 more nights. The driver brought me back to the airport and I was on my way home. Being by myself really gave me time to heal. >
FurEllie
I went by myself for my surgery, 2 fills and an unfill. I walked around the hotel and went to restaurants and stores. I never didn't feel safe. Your husband will be fine
