Kittycat
Paula Bee said she used to take a frozen diet coke to school...which got my wheels turning...if you drink soda/pop as a slushy, is it still carbonated? Has anyone ever had a diet coke slushy? If I can get my diet coke in any other form that will not jeapardize the band....I'll do it! If not, I guess I'm giving it up Thanks Cathy
bandgroupie
You can't make a slushy out of diet drinks... I was told the sweeteners prevent the soda from freezing into the slushy stage. Have frozen a diet coke before .... can't remember if it had fizz. I'm off of diet coke for almost TWO MONTHS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the same for candy!!!! I was a chocolaholic. If I can do it, you can do it. No diet coke Paula Bee said she used to take a frozen diet coke to school...which got my wheels turning...if you drink soda/pop as a slushy, is it still carbonated?Has anyone ever had a diet coke slushy? 2mara
Cathy, My surgery date is 5/30 -- so no personal experience. However, I have a friend that has been banded about 4 months says an occasional Cola-slushie is her personal treat. She has tried letting soda go flat by leaving it out for a long time before drinking it and says that it is still painful. But, a Coke slushie does work for her. Everyone is probably different. I agree with with BandGroupie... Try to give up the Dt. Coke now. I think it will be worth it later. You can do it!
Kittycat
Thanks ladies, I will do my best to give it up...and maybe try a cola slushie when I get desperate! LOL!! Cheers! Cathy
nothereanymore
Also, another important reason there are new studies out that show it weakens our bones - might as well get a good start on healthy living now! petnanny
No no no!!! A diet coke slushie still has carbonation! Want to feel a horrible burning sensation? Then have one!!! Here is a bit of info to get you to kick the coke habit! The sweetners in soda are hunger creating.... as in drink more, want to eat more!!! I loooove diet coke but limit to one a week because it makes me hungrier!!! And it is a proven fact. I sorry to say however am sucking down my last few since I go under the knife Thursday Give it up and spend that money on skimpy new hot clothes... The Redhead
I remember listening to a radio talk show once about how bad pop was for you, especially diet pop. I quit drinking pop for over a year. It was a bit of a struggle at first but now (before banding) I couldn't drink a whole can of pop at once if I tried. I was just reading something interesting on the net about how diet pop makes us fatter. This is the link... hope it works. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/06/13/...ain701408.shtml
MamaMichelle
I posted this last night in the "Bad for your Band" thread... Diet soda is dangerous A study of about 6,000 middle-aged men and women, who were observed over four years, at the Boston University School of Medicine showed that those who drank one or more soft drinks a day had a 31 percent greater risk of becoming obese. They had a 30 percent increased risk of developing a larger waist circumference, "which has been shown to predict heart disease risk better than weight alone"; a 25 percent increased risk of developing high blood triglycerides as well as high blood sugar; and a 32 percent higher risk of having low high-density lipoprotein or "good" cholesterol levels. The researchers then analyzed a smaller sample of participants on whom data on regular and diet soft drink consumption was available. Those who drank one or more diet or regular sodas per day had a 50 to 60 percent increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome, a syndrome marked by the presence of usually three or more of a group of factors, such as high blood pressure, abdominal obesity, high triglyceride levels, low HDL levels, and insulin resistance, that are linked to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. R.S. Vasan, MD, professor of medicine, Boston University School of Medicine. R. Dhingra. Circulation, July 31, 2007: vol 116: pp 1–9. What it really means. That diet soda is going to the mat. While it's still a relatively small-scale study (since diet soda is consumed by billions), it's plenty large enough to loft some serious bombs into the "zero calories is all you need to know" theory of fake-sugar marketing. There is no good reason why anyone should drink diet soda anymore. It doesn't taste as good as regular soda, has no nutritional value, has at least some health risk, and probably even makes you fat. mlgpdx
I wasn't a huge soda fan but I really, REALLY enjoy a Rum & Diet coke (with lots & lots of lime) The night b/4 my surgery I had 2, ok maybe 3, at the hotel bar knowing it would be my last hooorah for awhile. I would like to say I don't miss it but I really do miss my diet coke & Rum.. whatever other drink can I have thats low cal/carbs ?? I am not a fruit juice person and also don't like straight liquor. Any suggestions my fellow bandsters? I know I can't be the only one who misses her alcohol mixed w/ Diet Coke.
MamaMichelle
What about a margarita? The Cinco de Mayo thread gave me that idea!! Rum and Cranberry (since it's not really a sweet juice) You might like a Gimlet - basically either vodka or gin with sweetened lime juice. Here are a few other suggestions I pulled off the web: Bloody Mary Wine Manhattan Martini Pina Colada Daquri (strawberry, banana, etc)
Kittycat
Thanks ladies....you have convinced me! I have heard that diet coke/pepsi can clean the rust from your drains...so imagine how hard that is on your stomach?? I love cranberry juice and ice cold water...so I will do just fine.....I was tested last week when I had the flu and couldn't have soda for 3 days..I did fine! Thank you so much for the info and support....that's why the members of this forum are the best!! Have a great day, Cathy

Alana
Don't know if this will help, but here goes! In 2005, I had viral meningitis and was in the hospital for over 2 months. Some of the meds they gave me made anything carbonated taste like gross metal. He warned me the meds would stay in my system for quite a long time and that it would take a while for that metallic taste to go away, probably 3 months. Well, just the taste of the diet coke was so awful that it turned me away for almost a year, even though I could have had it way before then and it would have tasted fine. It was just a mental block that kept me from having anything carbonated. I always remembered that awful taste and I'd choose a different drink. Maybe if you associate Diet Coke with something gross, it'll be easier to give it up? Just a random thought. Good luck!
Paula Bee
EVERYONE agrees that diet coke is bad for you. In fact, any kind of carbonated cola is bad for you. In my 6th grade class, we used to put a boiled egg in a cola, and in a few days, the shell was gone. Calcium eaten away. <Shakes my head.> Really freaked out the kids. In Dr. Miranda's postop instructions, I believe she said no carbonated anything for 6 months. When she was talking to us she said, "I know on a hot day you come home and want a cold beer, but NO... no bubblies for 6 months!" It cracked us up, because we don't drink beer, but the point was taken.
Ms.Teacher
Hi Cathy! Idon't know about the freezing thing, but I've been banded over 3 years and I've never given up my addiction to Fresca. When I have a really tight fill I don't drink it. Other than that, I drink it. If you were just banded, you probably shouldn't, you are still healing. I know my doctor recommends no carbonation at all, but having my Fresca keeps me from making bad choices, plus I haven't damaged my band. Good luck!!!! :-h Helena
