Getting the Band taken off

Recommended Posts

Today I went to OCC to get my first fill. I was so excited and looking at the ladies sitting waiting to what I thought was their band, one of them was getting hers taken off! I have to admit she had a lot of guts telling us that she was getting it taken out. I asked her why and she said it didn't work for her. She commented about not having a good support at home and not having a support community. Then she brought up that she just didn't eat right. It really made me think how the band is a tool not a magic band that is going to make us thin.

I thanked her for sharing her experience and wished her the best. We really need to change our way of thinking about food. That is so hard for me. I have a love affair with it and I need to get it under control or it will always control me. I want to be healthy and I know I need to think that way so I can them achieve it!

Does anyone now of others that have had it taken off?

When I was there for my 1st fill (4/18) there was a woman there having her band removed, I don't recall the exact reasoning behind it but I believe she had horrible reflux and even with zero fill she was still having issues..

I believe I remember Hanna (WAgal) saying she spoke with her more than I did so maybe she can fill in the details!

Again the band isn't a magic wand that is going to whisk your food issues away, it does take support and hard work to make the band work for you I think some people aren't ready to make the commitment..

Hope it wasn't too much of a deterrent for you Maytee, you've made great progress and your 1st fill will only make things better- So keep up the good work!

wow! That makes me value the support I'm getting even more. Everyone at work is excited for me - I slowly let most people know and I'm sure they will tell others when they ask where I am, and that's fine with me. I work at a small company with only about 40 people.

My family and friends are also supportive. My step-mother is driving up from Savannah to fly out with me.

I don't know how people who don't tell their friends and family do it.

It's not easy, believe me!! The only people I told are my Hubby, 2 daughter's and one friend. I have their support, which means the world to me! I live in a small town were my husband was born and raised. If his family knew that I went to Mexico for lapband surgery [any kind of surgery] they would have hounded us to death! I do plan on telling everyone after I get my first fill at the end of the month. I don't want our girls worrying about keeping "Mommy's secret". When I do tell them, the first thing I'm going to say is "don't say a word, it's done and over with and all's well." I know I won't have their support, but I don't care.

I can't imagine getting my band removed because I didn't have a good support system. I wonder if those ladies know about this forum?? I know that I can come here to discuss anything that's going on with me and I really appreciate it! No one else know's exactly what I'm going through except all of you.... I LOVE YOU MAN!! :lb12: :friends:

I only told my parents, my husband and kids, and 3 friends. I don't want to tell others just yet, especially my brother who thinks he is all it. I don't want the negative comments of "well if you would just eat less, or workout at the gym or do this or that" they aren't overweight and don't struggle like I do and it is very discouraging for people to tell you what you should and shouldn't be doing or how you should live. So poo on them. I'm here for me and this forum has actually became my surrogate family. SO THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR ALL THAT YOU DO AND SAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know for sure how to work this site. I need to get some help because I am going to truely need you all for suport! the only person who is going to know about my proceedure on 6-6-8 is my husband. He is a great guy, but has never had a weight issue, he understands that I would like to experience life in an adverage size body and I love him for that. It will not help duing the struggles ahead and the suport that I'll need. I was once a member of Over Eaters Annonomous and the suport meant so much to me.

Maytee,

First of all I'd like you to describe her to me. What details did she tell you? Remember when we returned from our group fill (4-18-08) and I posted that there were 8 surgeries plus one... and I didn't elaborate on the plus one, I said long story? She supposedly had her band put on 2005 only started having trouble in Feb 2008 with not being able to get rid of acid reflux for everything she ate, claims she only lost 30 lbs. through it all. I will email the proper people at OCC and find out about this particular woman... it almost sounded like she wanted to discourage everyone purposely. If it is the same woman then there is something wrong as to why she didn't have her surgery done yet or maybe something else is up. If it is a different woman and the claim is genuine then we ought to look into this further. If these claims are genuine then from all the forums I've read, the only ones that usually remove them are the ones that have a slip or those that regretted it because they realize that they can't gorge on food and would like to still.

Let this at least be a reminder that the band is not magic and that we do have to change our eating habits and food choices as the band (for us banded) is finicky. I'm happy with my band so far and I love that it doesn't allow me to continue my bad habits. Like trying to eat fast when I'm hungry. I came home yesterday after a long day looking for a wheel barrow. Yeah..it was ridiculous. Did other errands and didn't get home till late. I was so hungry that I started chewing a piece of meat without sitting down and actually having my regular sit down meal. Wrong decision. That first swallow went bad and I had to walk around for about 10 mins. till it went down. My band is training me, reminding me, whatever.. I don't like the feeling but it sure makes me think hard now each time I make the wrong decisions with my old eating habits.

I'm researching stress and how it affect our restriction. Somehow I'm curious as it doesn't make sense to me. After all, there's a limited amount of saline in our band that restricts us, that's why we get filled right? How is it that this device can affect it's restriction when it's not a living tissue? I understand that when we lay down then get up in the morning that it affects the band or even the pressure from an airplane when we travel. But stress?? More on this later. In the meantime all is well so long as you are prepared and aware that the band is a tool not a quick fix.

Have a wonderful day ladies. I'm still shoveling dirt in the backyard so I'm getting a great sweaty workout.

Hanna:)

Wagirl,

She didn't give anymore details about it. She looked very discouraged. I really felt for her. I do think your on to something about the stress thing. When she was sharing about not have a good support system at home maybe they sabatoged her. I would think that would be overwhelmingly stressful. She was very quiet about her self until I asked her if she was excited to getting the band and that is when she shared she was getting it taken off. I don't think she was the other lady you met.

I asked her if she was concidering getting another surgery and she said no. She never tried to dicouage anyone while I was there.

Mama Michelle,

I wasn't dicouraged at all by what she shared with us. It made me realize I still have to work for my weightloss and that is good for me. I don't want to fail at this and I won't! Haveing everyone in this forum be so encouraging really makes it better for all of us to keep going.

Thanks for the Encouragement!!!!!!! ><'

I often wonder if the band is a poor choice for someone who doesn't eat very healthy. We are all getting the band because there is something wrong with our diet but for many of us it is that we eat healthy...just too much. If one ate only junk food and continued this after the band, I think they could probably get very ill/malnurished. It is a reminder to be sure to eat according to Dr. Miranda's guidelines so we ensure our health is utmost.
