Diva
So my surgery is this Thursday and I'm supposed to lose 15 lbs. before then, but I'm only down like 6!! Will my surgery be canceled? Anyone have any tips other than just a liquid diet to lose bigtime between now and then? I only lost half of my pre op weight. Everything was fine. I didn't want to shut my metabolism down so I was kind of resistant to cutting calories below 1200. I heard too many stories about people consuming almost nothing post op and not losing. I guess everybody is different but you'll most likely be fine. Best wishes.
Allcdngirl
Hey.. I'm supposed to lose 10 - 12 and I'm down 7. I'm being banded with you on Thursday. I've been pretty good with having the 2 shakes a lien cuisine for dinner, however, it is hard on the weekend, when you're home for all three meals. My boys are taking me out for breakfast tomorrow morning, but I've passed on a mother's day barbeque, because when I went to a barbeque last weekend, I didn't do so well. I decided to resist the temptation. I hope that I can be good for the rest of the day tomorrow, and all day Monday and Tuesday. Weds will be hard because after pre-op testing then you're going to eat, and the increase in calories, will add on lbs. I haven't heard of them cancelling any surgery's. My g/f was banded last year here in Canada, and was not required to lose any pre-op weight. They also told her no less that 4 week liquids only post-op. Different rules, kind of makes you wonder? fat2nrml
I weighed 214lbs when I started my pre-op diet and weighed 208lbs on my surgery day. Dr. Miranda said I did good and I had no trouble with my surgery. I don't think you'll have a problem, just try to stick with it though. It'll be easier on you and easier for Dr. O to do the surgery. Best wishes!! Darlene >
calicat
Your surgery wouldn't be cancelled for the 6 pounds weight loss alone. There are other pre-op tests to follow. Try hard from now until Thursday to do liquids only - it will be good for your organs and help with a quicker recovery.
Jacqui1
Hi there!! I only lost 3 pounds pre-op and Dr. Miranda never even mentioned it. So don't worry!!

mona-camille
I was required to lose 20 and was not approved until I hit 16. Yes, they will cancel if you don't do it. I think the more you weigh the more you are required to lose. So, try harder. WHat they were going to do with me was, allow me to still fly out since I had the tickets already but make me have nothing but fluids for 2 days and then they would do the surgery, so do not assume that it will be ok just because it was for others. jena
Why ask us? Call Dr Miranda and ask her because she is the first person you see when you get there. Trust me on this, if you can't commit to the pre op diet, it's doubly hard to commit to the post op diet. Things DO NOT get easier in the days after getting your band. Read the post op diet carefully. Dr. Ortiz has a high success rate and one reason is the paces they put everyone through before they are banded. They care just as much about your success post band as they do about banding you. By that I mean this is not a lap-band surgery factory. The OCC is dedicated to pre-care and post-care, but as Dr. Ortiz told me, the only determining factor of success is the patient. They work very hard to give you the tools to succeed. It's up to you to use them. Jena
calicat
someone just made a very good point - 1. pre-op is much easier than post-op. you can cheat on pre-op and not cause any direct harm. if you cheat on post-op, you can cause great harm. 2. dr. miranda is one of those pre-op appointments you have to pass to qualify for surgery. she's not going to tell you any different on the phone though than what she's already told you. she doesn't bend the rules. and i don't think it's your starting weight in pounds that matters, rather, your bmi that makes all the difference. i weigh more in pounds than others, actually, everyone there on my band date, but it's you bmi number that they look at and is important. i reached my 15 pd. pre-op goal, but I did start a week early and i did modify it and "cheat" towards the end. do what is right for you - but remember, you are doing it for reasons other than just losing weight - like detoxing, losing fat around the organs, and i think your stomach does shrink making the post-op, in theory, a little easier. between now and then - drink tons of water!!! i had protein shakes for breakfast and lunch, and a modified dinner - but drank tons and tons of water. i also, not by choice, fasted the day before which I'm sure helped - i was supposed to arrive by noon for pre-ops but my flights were almost 3 hours delayed. i refused all drink services on the plane since i didn't know until i landed they wouldn't do pre-ops late...and only then, was i in baggage claim - where there wasn't any good food! ate room service at lucerna, and fasted after midnight. you can do it!!! my_friend_amber
Thanks to everyone for your input. I've lost a noticeable amount of inches, but the pounds are another story. I'm afraid I started doing too much elliptical and put on some muscle (as my body type does.) Just FYI, I have called Dr. Miranda, but just haven't heard back from her quite yet. I am not substituting anyone's opinion for Dr. Mirandas, just wanted to get some info from those of you who've been there before.
FLAN
Let us know what Dr. Miranda said. I am having my surgery on June 2. I have been learning to like slim fast shakes. I only have 41 more left to drink...lol

Make sure you let her know what you just said here about the inches and gaining muscle mass. That might sway her a little. I did do a lot of walking to help lose the weight, but not enough to make a difference with muscle. Also, what kicked it up for me was, shake for breakfast, lunch and then just meat and veggies for dinner. The Adkins shakes are very filling and taste great. Also, the GNC 100% whey protein is very very good too and is even better than the Adkins. Those you make yourself. I use double the powder and milk rather than water and that makes them taste great. And most important THINK POSITIVE YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Listen, you can forget the nervousness, I am being nervous for you right now, LOL!! This is exactly how it was for me near my date. Crazy with nerves, but it will be ok. Just KNOW that it will be ok and it wil be!
Dontondan
I would definitely talk with Dr. Miranda, Sounds like you are building some muscle mass and that is heavier than the fat. This will all even out eventually, but very frustrating nonetheless. It just makes things alot easier for the Doc's during surgery to have that weight loss........picture fat clogging the lens and having to clean it more frequently to see what you are doing in there! Yuck! Just do your best and stick to the pre-op guidelines the best to your ability and everything should work out for you.
