A few clues that you (I?) might have problems with portion control

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am 2 weeks post op and have really done a lot of discovery these last two weeks. For example, I discovered that I don't know how to drive a car without a large soda in one hand and a cheeseburger in the other. (Laf! I haven't really tried it... I've been a good girl, but it just feels bizarre to have both hands available to drive!)

During my discovery, I have also assembled a list of the top three clues that you (okay, I) might have issues with portion control:

1. I stocked the pantry during pre-op to be ready for the clear liquid 4 to 7 days with 5 cartons of chicken broth, 4 cans of chicken broth, 12 boxes of Special K Protien water mix, 24 boxes of Crystal lite mix, and a jar of bullion.

2. To get ready for creamy soup phase (something like 10 to 14 days) I bought 5 cases of Campbell's Soup at Hand, (2)12-packs of SlimFast Optima, 6 (4) packs of EAS Protein shakes, and a whole lot of drinkable yogurt.

3. Every day I pack my food in a little cooler -- a couple of shakes, a couple of soups, a couple of yogurts, a bunch of water. Everyday, I bring about 75% of that food back home untouched and half to throw out at least one yogurt.

HA! I have actually been a very good girl (except for one tablespoon of lime sherbert during a weak moment) but this new awareness which just arrived today that I have a disconnect between how much food a person should eat and how much I buy, pack, and used to eat has been enlightening!

What have you learned on your journey?

~Tanya

P.S. I have also learned that 1 box of sugar free fudgesicles is NOT enough. With kids, kid's friends, and dear husband around I only got 1 of the 12 popsicles and some litte twerp put the empty box back in the freezer. I think I'm going to make them all eat creamy soup for a punishment!

OMG Tanya... that was hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing! Did you reallly buy all that stuff?? haha.. I can relate with bringing back 75% of it.. I did the same thing. And I still have 4 of the 5 big cartons of Chicken Broth that I bought, because it tastes like shit.. yuk!

Tanya....

That is part of the sickness of obesity...we hoard food! I am the same way. I can't be happy unless I have a full pantry of stuff I can't even eat! It makes me feel better just knowing it is there. Someday I may be able to deal with this issue, but not today. As long as I don't eat it all, and I don't, I just like having there, just in case! Silly huh?

I can relate! I'm always used to when people say "what size" at fast food to say "the biggest you have" or "large." Well I went to BR for a peach fruit blast and said "regular" and I only got through like maybe a quarter of it. And that was slowly eating it over like an hours time, haha. I should've said "small," but I'm not used to saying that! :)

Yep.. I really bought all that!

I also bought a CASE (12 packs of 24 tablets) of Mylanta Gas chewable tablets AND a case of Gas-X strips. And, dang it, I've been blessed with very little gas! I've only used 4 strips total... and one was because I felt obligated!

I wish you all lived next door so I could share my hoard with you!!!

I bought two bottles of the Centrum Liquid Vitamin, and force myself to take it every day (if I remember). I think I'm going to take my 2nd bottle back, and buy Flinstones!

I can totally relate...I bought 5 cartons of broth, chicken, beef and vegetable. 14 packages of jello to make, two large jugs of non-sweetened cranberry juice and a box of popcicles for the clear liquid phase. Not to mention the um-teen cans of creamy soup, unsweetened yogurts, unsweetened puddings, two boxes of cream of wheat cereal and fudgecicles. I cleared a cupboard and section of the fridge just for me. Told my hubby and kids what was off limits and just for me.

So far so good!

Oh, I almost forgot, two boxes of Gas-X strips, Ovol Gas med, ES Tylenol, Fiber supplement to add to soups, chewable vitamins and Biotin.

Cheers to doing it right!!

I have always "stocked up" on things, just in case....I will probably always do this, but I am stocking up on better things now, thank goodness! My pantry is s-l-o-w-l-y getting less and less in it, but I have a long way to go. I still cook like I am feeding an army, but I have a houseful teenagers and always expect a few extra mouths to feed every day. This may be troublesome when I retire and it is just my husband and I. At least I don't use the drive thrus anymore, used to be a daily thing, now I prefer better restaurants if I go out at all, and I share a plate with everyone else at the table. Luckily my family and friends don't mind this and are very supportive. Food is a very big thing in my culture.... everything was revolved around a meal, not just a meal, but a huge meal! I haven't changed my cooking much at all, but my portions have really changed. I have my "special" plates and mini utensils, I cut and portion everything on my plate prior to eating so I can slow down and savor the flavors more. I also try to make everything look pretty on the plate so it seems more special. Even though I do this I still fall back into my old habits of preparing for any social situation by storing supplies to cook for an army! I try to make an effort to pick quality now over quantity though. I splurge on special things....like CRAB LEGS or LOBSTER, which I never used to do, but I eat so little of it that it doesn't cost me much. I can only eat 1 or 2 legs instead of the 12 or 14 I used to eat. A steak now lasts me for 3 meals....I have adapted by cutting up leftovers and using it for other dishes during the week. I will eat steak one day and then cut the rest up and throw it on a salad or make a fajita later on.

I found the mini utensils at IKEA. They are a "playset" for kids! I love them, they are very nice and classy, just smaller. I also bought some of the seafood forks that work nicely and some ice tea spoons which are smaller. I like these ones the best.

I have been using the Centrum Silver chewables... not bad at all.

Honestly, I cannot believe you stocked up like that.. LOL.. I am one who will taste something at least one time before I buy a ton of it.

Also, I also believe that we are hoarders.. the compulsion that there won't be anything to eat if the pantry is full.

I did read and believe the theories in Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat?" I had also heard this over and over at my hypnosis sessions a couple of years ago. Clutter all around you overwelms, and people turn to eating to alleviate the stress. Or, they are stressed and tired, and the clutter just piles up. Either way, you end up eating poorly and usually not exercising.
