Mizzoupoodle
Hi all, I am new to the forum and wanted to introduce myself!! I am sceduled for surgery on July 25th!!! I am SUPER NERVOUS right now...my husband thinks I am CRAZY to do this and even Crazier to do it in Mexico. I have lost some weight on my own over the last year and a half but I have gotten stuck at my current weight of 223. It sounds nutty but my hunger is always driving me now and I am terrified of regaining my lost weight. I started at 289 and have gotten to 223 so I am not ungrateful but want more, lol. I have 3 children...all girls...a 7 year old, 5 year old and a 4 year old. I am thinking I may have to come alone for my surgery since my husband will have to stay with the kids. I don't have a friend who can take off to go with me. Has anyone else made the trip solo? I am feeling very scared right now...I hope I am doing the right thing!! Alana
Hi Sylvia!! :lb9: First of all, you are making an EXCELLENT decision to be banded by Dr. Ortiz. He is simply one of the best, regardless of where his office is located. My mom and I travelled there for my surgery on May 9th and not once did we feel scared about where we were. I have driven through worse neighborhoods here in Florida. Second of all, you need to make this decision for YOU. Don't base it on what others think - only you know what you need. In the long run, you'll be benefiting your family. Thirdly, there have been people who have travelled alone for their surgery and I never heard any complaints. You'll be physically capable of travelling alone, just pack light. We're all here to help - this forum has been a lifesaver for me. Don't hesitate to ask questions! *BTW, your surgery is the day before my birthday!

Sylvia Welcome and congratulations on your decision! I went myself on June 9th and it was more than fine. I didn't feel unsafe at all. OCC picks you up at the airport and returns you there. There will be probably eight or nine other people there for bands and you will fall naturally into the group. No worries! You are in safe hands. C1BandedBabe
Sylvia WELCOME! I am actually having surgery on the 27th but will fly in on the 26th. I am also going alone because my hubby is on deployment in Japan right now... I am meeting another girl there from the forum (Mommyof2wins) we are getting banded the same day... I think you will be totally fine with going by yourself! Look forward to meeting you!
momonamission
I am a Mom of two. Girl 9 and Boy 7. Of course my husband was scared and did not want me to do it. He finally jumped on board when he saw how much I had studied it, but was still very worried. He did not go with me. For one reason he stresses out so bad he would have made the trip more stressful for me. Another reason is I had a friend go with me who also had the surgery at the same time. So we have been a great support to each other. It was the easiest surgery I have ever had. The hard part is right now ... the 3 weeks of liquds. I onlyl have until next tuesday to wait. I would do the surgery again tommorow if I could bypass the liquid stage. You will make the right deciscion for you. In the end I wanted it for me, my childred, and my husband. I am so glad I went to Dr. Ortiz. It was a great experience and I made some great friends there that I corrispond with daily. Dawn

Sylvia I have just got back from being banded and I was very impressed with the OCC. Everyone was super. I have been in hospitals here in the states that would not even compare to the excellent care that I received while there. Don't Worry, you will be in good hands. I only wished that I had went there when I was first starting to consider the lap-band , 3 years ago.
Kittycat
Welcome Sylvia!!! You are making the right decison!! I can't advise you on your trip to OCC...I had my surgery here in Canada. thesuse
Good for you for doing this for yourself! I'm getting banded next week (yay!) and have been reading this forum for a while, and everyone seems to have a great experience at the OCC - whether they are traveling alone or not. Good luck! And welcome to the forum!
Paula Bee
Hello, Sylvia, and welcome! The clinic is wonderful and the banding experience is easier than we can explain. Many of us went shopping the afternoon after we were discharged from the clinic. I have come alone twice now, and kind of enjoyed the "me" time without my husband. (I love him dearly, but everyone needs some "me" time.) Glad you scheduled surgery and looking forward to gettting to know you here in the forum. My mother thought I was crazy too for having it done in Mexico, but I have researched it so much I think she is okay. She will be coming with me. Maybe we will meet up at the airport. Where are you coming from? Hope
fat2nrml
I was banded on 3-25 and went by myself. PLEASE BELEIVE ME, you'll meet SO many people while you're there. I met a fellow bandster and her friend and we went shopping the day after our surgery and had a blast!! We actually met back up last month and got our first fill together.... had a blast again!!! I didn't take any jewelry on the trip [my choice, didn't want bothered] and I kept money in different places in my purse and suitcase [use one with wheels!] The OCC is at your beck and call the entire time, plus the Lucerna staff is awesome!! No worries, enjoy your trip!! <' /> Best wishes, Darlene
Fat 2 Fab
I was nervous too! The three nights leading up to surgery I couldn't sleep. Try to recruit a friend to go with you, but if you can't the staff at OCC is so nice and caring. They will take such good care of you. The office is nice and clean and everyone is so friendly. There is nothing to be afraid of. I am so pleased with the level of professionalism. The only difference is LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! If it were in the states it would be more expensive, but the same service.

Mizzoupoodle
Thank you to everyone for your kind replies!!!!! It really helps to have such encouragement!!! It really helps to hear others made it and some of you went alone as well! I am going to try to get a friend to join me. Surprisingly, some of my close friends are not being the biggest supporters. I am hoping we can meet as well, Hope! It will be wonderful to meet some other people having the surgery. I could have the surgery here in KC but to be honest the surgeons haven't done as many bands. So I don't think Mexico is so crazy when you consider the surgeon you are using is a critical factor. Everyone on the board seems to be so impressed with Dr. Ortiz!!! >
Painter
Congratulations on your decision to be banded. I think you are very wise to do it now rather than gain the hard won loss you already have. I made the mistake of waiting until I gained everything back and then some. The OCC is fabulous and you will likely meet several of your fellow bandsters in the lounge when they come to pick you up (I did). The whole experience for me was amazing and it was kind of like when I was in hospital to have my kids. Everyone is there for the same reason and it is kind of like a vacation. I don't know if you know what I mean but it is different from any other surgery because it is your choice. There were others who went solo and no one was left out. They throw the husband/friend/mom etc. out the evening after the surgery anyway so we all had to mix amongst ourselves. They allow you to use the phone toll free and there are computers to email if you wish. As for your friends I am sure they are worried/threatened by your decision. If they are true friends they will support you once they get over their surprise. Don't let that discourage you. Hang in there we are all here to support you.
