Strength Training

Recommended Posts

I know that we're supposed to wait about 3 months until we can do any crunches/situps, but when can we begin going to the gym and doing strength training with the exception of situps?

I know alot of strenght training utilizes your core muscles and i'm just curious as to if we had to wait 3 months to begin lifting weights or not.

Thanks

Dave

I waited three months before I went snow skiing and I would suggest you wait three months to strength train - almost every exercise with weights requires you to keep your core tight - i found I got really sore when I snuck in the gym early (even doing bicep curls, tricep extensions, etc.).

You might be able to start going after two months but why not stick to cardio - the bike, elliptical machine, easy jog/walk on treadmill will burn calories and keep your heart in good shape.

Also swimming if you have access to a pool is a pretty good workout.....

If you must must must go to gym and strength train - be very careful and go slow and see how it goes.

Thats too bad we're not able to do it earlier. I have read in multiple places that the best thing for saggy skin or loose skin is to strength train as those topical creams and what not dont work. I'm losing weight quickly and will be a bag of skin by the time 3 months comes. I was hoping to help that as much as i could with lifting :(

Mysterymachine,

Your post ruined my day. That is, if I have to wait three months to go snowboarding. I am going to research this and let you know. The stomach and band are on the inside and shouldn't be too effected by adominal muscles, the sutures surely won't take that long to heal completely. I'll be on the internet all night trying to find these things out

Just an FYI, one of the surgeons at Scripps mentioned someone's port having to be redone after a Tye Bo class. Not sure if it was from over-twisting the abdomen or what, but the port is very much tied in with the abdominal area, so be careful!
