banded but miserable

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Well it has been 4 days since my op and i am still in hospital.

Apparently during the laprascopy the surgeon found that my liver and an artery were lapping the stomach and he was unable to continue by laprascopy. He made an incision from sternum to navel and they completed the op.

It really feels like a nightmare and I have lost faith in my surgeon. I don't know if I have been unlucky or if my surgeon was inept.

I can barely move and as I flew in to have the op, have been without my family for this time. I had a caesarean when my daughter was born and it was a walk in the park in comparison.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi Shasha...so sorry for what you're going through right now. I've not had any problems at all. I'm assuming you are not down at the OCC. I am 4 months post op today from the OCC and the doctors were pretty consistent with wanting their patients to lose weight prior to surgery. One of the reason was to reduce the amount of fat around the area where they would be doing the procedure. They recommended shakes and/or lean cuisine meals depending upon how much the patient's BMI was. Who did your surgery? I read in your blog that you were suppose to be starting a new job right about now. What will happen now? I know the recovery time for the open procedure is significantly longer than it is with the lap band.

You'll get a lot of support from the people on this forum. Check back in and let us know how you're doing. Good luck.

Hi Sasha, I feel for you. I hope you feel better soon.

I was told by my surgeon that if they were not able to manage the liver laproscopically, they would have to perform an open surgery. I don't think your surgeon was negligent in anyway, it was either close you up without a band or open you up to insert the band.

Take care and recover well!

Thanks everyone.

I am feeling much better since I wrote the post. I am to be released tomorrow night (hopefully) and my husband will be flying in tomorrow morning. My canula has been removed and I have more mobility.

No, I am not at OCC, I am currently living in the middle east. There is not much support here, so I have found these forums invaluable.

I was supposed to be starting a new job on Sunday, but that wont be happening now - I will need another week off at least. Its is all very embarrasing and I guess I have to blame myself for keeping the timing quite tight.

Yes I was in shock! I didn't expect to have a huge scar or to be so incapacitated.

Thank you all for ypou kind words.

Hi Shasha,

thank you for sharing you story. Poor kid, and with those beautiful eyes too, don't be sad. I have read a lot before being banded and my biggest fear was to be opened up the way you were. the books said it can happen and does from time to time, sorry it was to you. Mabe there will be a tummy tuck for you in the future and all those scars will be traded in for one scar out of the way and a very flat tummy. It will all work out for you in the end. One day at a time.

Be well and take care of your self, the band is a journey and it is slow but almost always goes forward, sometimes with baby steps and sometimes in leaps. Be patient and pray.

Sasha my heart goes out to you. I would be so shocked too. Think of it this way.....a scare that will fade in time, or major helath problems due to your weight(possible early death). I would take the scare any day. Having said that, it does take time to deal with the feelings and emotions of it all and put it in a place of acceptance. Please update us regularily on your recovery. I will be thinking of you.

Hugs

Trudy

Shasha: I am so sorry to hear of your rather traumatic experience. And unfortunately yes, this can be something that must be done. You definitely cannot retract enough to visualize when you would be pressing on an artery and perhaps damage it....I know I have been in the OR as a nurse for hundreds of procedures.

Glad to hear you are better today. Yes this is a shock to you but you are already on your way to recovering soon. Take it easy and keep us posted.

Thanks so much everyone.

I am back home again and feeling better each day though still walking like an (unfit) old woman.

I very much appreciate your taking the time to respond and will look forward to getting to hopefully know you all a bit better as we continue on our journey together.

Hope this week is a great one for you.
