Opps...I have one more question

Recommended Posts

I am sorry, I keep making posts, but I keep thinking of new questions, and you guys are so helpful :) I am just trying to get everything in line and get all the information I can before I schedule my surgery date. Ok, so I have a concern about allergies. I am deathly allergic to several medications, penicillin (sp?) being a major one. How do the doctors handle that? I once heard a horror story about a doctor giving a patient who was out, penicillin, and they died from it. So I am really scared of something like this happening, especially if I am not awake to stop them. Do I need to write in on my body so they know or write on my gown..j/k of course...just makes me nervous!!

They do a medical work-up just prior to surgery. All information that is relevant and important should be brought up then. That should alleviate any concerns.

Take care,

My Dr had me fill out an online questionnaire before my first consultations. Then he went over everything I filled out and had more questions. I also wrote down any questions I had before I went in and brought them with me.

You have a 2 -3 hour prep time before you go into surgery, this is when anyone who will be in the surgery room will come and see you to talk to you. I had 5 people talk to me while I was being prepped - each one introducing themselves, what part they would be assisting in, asking questions and answering any last minute questions I had. There is a lot of checking going on before you go in - trust me they don't want to mess anything up. I had the nurse quiz me about the vitamins I was taking, why I was taking them, how long I'd been taking them and the doses...they want to know your history, any surgery's you've had in the past, are you a smoker, drinker or recreational drug user...they go over it with a fine tooth comb :) I hope this helps ~ Kim

You're given a bolice of antibiotics thru your IV before surgery, I'm not sure what it is, but I don't think it's in the penicillin family....but be sure to check and ask about that with Carolyn, and she'll get you to the person you need to speak with. They're very thorough.
