More pre-op diet questions

Recommended Posts

Like I said in my other post, I haven't been losing as quickly as I should. I've been a yo-yo dieter for 25 years, so I don't lose weight quickly. But I figure almost everybody else was too!

So can you tell me what did you eat? Did you also exercise?

Am I eating too much/not enough at 900-1,000 calories a day?

My surgery is this Friday, Nov. 21, and I need to lose about 9 lbs by then.

thanks!!

Amanda

Hi Amanda, I think the most common pre-op is a slimfast shake for breakfast and lunch and a lean cuisine for dinner.

I was on Optifast 900 plan, 4 shakes per day for two weeks, lost 12 lbs.

The OCC can provide some suggestions to you as well.

Good Luck!

Hi Amanda,

I was banded on friday and my starting weight before surgery was 262. The first week I had a high protien shake for breakfast and lunch and the a lein cuisine for dinner everday for 17 days, started three days ahead. I lost 10 lbs the frst week. The second week I switch the slimfast for breakfast and lunch, the high protien shakes were getting hard to drink. I lost 4 more pounds the second week and my weight in at the OCC was 246. I was maybe getting 600 to 6501 calories a day. The liene cuisine was under 300 calories. They have ALOT of different ones, but the are higher calories. Oh yeah I also took a fiber pil at 9 everymoring and again at 3 every afternoon. This helped out with my hunger pains. Trust me it may be hard until surgery but it is all worth it. Hang in their. If I did it, trust me you can too.

Good Luck

That has been what I've been eating pretty much - Ensure shake for breakfast and lunch (250 calories each) and a Lean Cuisine for dinner. I also eat sugar-free Jello (10 calories each) and have been taking a few chewable fiber tablets (16 calories each). I only lost three pounds last week. :o

I will switch to the Optifast shakes though they aren't as good as the Ensure ones. Dr. Miranda said it was OK to take a diuretic for water weight if I think I am bloated.

Hi Amanda! Oh...the date is getting closer! YAY!

Dr. Miranda put me on the Diet 2 option plan, two weeks prior to surgery, which I've lost 13 lbs! Here is what I had:

(8 oz Water)

Breakfast - protein shake

(8 oz Water)

*10am - (1) Metamucil capsule for curbing your hunger feeling, per Dr. Miranda

(8 oz Water)

Lunch - protein shake

(8 oz Water)

*3pm - (1) Metamucil capsule for curbing your hunger feeling, per Dr. Miranda

(8 oz Water)

Dinner - I used deli luncheon meat slices (Turkey or Chicken from Buddig or Hillshire) and a small salad with hard boiled egg (no yolk) and about 1 oz of cheddar cheese with the sprayed salad dressings Dr. Miranda suggested, from Wishbone.

(8 oz Water)

Snack, if I wanted one, was either sugar-free Jell-O or pudding.

In addition, I did aerobic excercises in the morning before going to work and at night, at home, every day.

Dr. Miranda did say I could have diet soda pop, but I didn't want to continue this because after surgery, until 6 months post op, you cannot have soda pop at all. I didn't need the "temptation" and went "cold turkey" and just cut it completely. I started immediately with the protein water, Crystal Light, and tea...and this helped me a lot to think healthier in what I was drinking.

I hope this helps you!

Ugh... five days before I arrive I'm stuck at 10 lbs above my target pre-op weight!!! I will be on a very strict diet of three Optifast shakes only per day :-( I think a problem is that I'm definitely retaining water and waste... I've eaten a couple All-Bran Fiber Bars to get things moving but nothing so far.

I'm SO afraid of getting there and getting sent home without a band because I haven't lost enough weight :(( :(( :((

Today I ate 800 calories

two Optifast shakes

two all-bran bars

one Ensure shake (I was starving)

I really really really hate calorie obsessing...

Try not to stress yourself out too much, that won't help. Just make sure to THINK yourself into losing weight. You know, like, I WILL LOSE WEIGHT!

Amanda hun...STOP obsessing yourself with the calorie counting and weight scaling. This can cause you to stress out more and you will not stay focus.

DO THIS...remember how you felt when you finally hear about the lapband and you set your surgery date ~ that beaming, excited feeling and? You NEED to get that feeling back!

Keep a journal sweetheart. This is what I had done and STILL DO. It helps me get to where I am suppose to be and do. I bought me one of those 3-hole tear-away, lined, paper pads from Target and I write down what I eat, my exercises I am doing, my small, reachable, goals I want to reach, and my feelings for the day. At the end of the day, if I had a "good" day, I would put a STAR on the upper right hand corner and put it in my 2" binder for "future reference". When I think I am not doing good, I refer back to the days I "felt good". with the starred pages, and re-read what my day was like then and copycat what I ate and did that day and re-evaluated my current day's journal to make it better, to continue my road to success - it really works. If you haven't drank all your water, make (8) small circles, on the right hand side, by your food diary, and as you drink one full glass, color in a circle.

You have to do this one day at a time babe. It doesn't happen all at once. It takes time and energy. YOU CAN DO THIS AMANDA! This may seem elementary or childish to you to do - but if this is what it takes to stay on course and focus ahead to be successful, then it's worth it a try.

TRUST ME, you will have both bad and good days. Staying positive and focused helps me be motivated to go forward.

Hope this helps!

I'm down 2 lbs from yesterday. Yay! :D If I can lose 6 more by Friday I will be in the range where hopefully they won't turn me away.

I have a calorie counter on my iPhone where I put in everything I eat. I can also add exercise, though I haven't been able to do much except for some walking. (I have a back injury and have to take it easy).

By the way, I'm also a journalism student and an editor at my university newspaper. I am going to be writing a first-person report on my experience. Dr. Ortiz has already agreed to be interviewed. I will send you the links so you can read it too.

AWESOME Amanda! I would love to read it. Tracking is good if it helps you. Like I said, don't get too stressed out...they will take you in for surgery as long as you show you are really trying to lose the weight. Also, losing the weight will help decrease the fatty tissues around your liver and Dr. O will decide what band size to use on you. Good Luck!

I would love to hear your story! Definitely send it out when you have it done. That will be great!

I'm sure as long as you try your best right down to the end they will do your surgery. Don't lay off, lose as much as you can, but I didn't lose all the weight I was supposed to but they did mine anyway. I lost a good chunk of it and I think they could tell I tried.

Good luck!!
