Question about the creamy soups

This is probably overly obsessive-compulsive, but I want to make sure I do everything correctly post-op. I start creamy soups in a couple of days, and I'm relying on Campbells and other store-bought soups. I went shopping and came across a number of things that looked like creamy soups: cream of broccoli and cheddar, cream of potato, creamed butternut squash, etc. However, I was wondering if some of these qualify more as the pureed type rather than the creamy type. What types of soups did you buy while on the creamy soup stage? I'd love to try out some of the vegetable 'creamed' soups, but don't want to risk messing up in case those are considered pureed or have little bits of vegetables that are not totally creamed (e.g. broccoli bits).

I know, obsessive-compulsive...

I think most creamy soups are OK, but I would avoid cream of potato soup. I would imagine it's rather thick and starchy.

I love cream of broccoli and tomato basil soup. I could eat those nonstop! My hunger has returned unfortunately (I'm on Day 10) and I've been craving that tomato basil soup. :o

I strained the chunks of broccoli and tomatoes etc. in some of the creamy soups. All you can have is liquid, it can be creamy, but you can't blend foods etc.

When I was in the creamy soup stage I just used my hand blender and blended the chunks away.

FYI:

I guess it depends on the Dr. But, the OCC says DO NOT blend food during the 21 days of liquid. If it is not creamy or liquid, you can't eat it. A lot of people were blending potatoes, etc. but it clearly says on our paperwork to not do it. In fact, I double checked with Dr. Miranda and she said, if people blend potatoes, it will just lead to blending more and more food.

Thanks for the advice! I too thought that blended/pureed was not ok, so was wary about the possible soups that could be considered to be such. I'll strain out my soups just to be on the safe side.

When I got tired of the standard creamy soups, I used my hand blender to blend the potatoes and the clams in my Progresso Clam Chowder. It was a WONDERFUL change.

I would also suggest downloading the very tasty chicken tortilla soup off of the recipe links here at the OCC site. I LIVED on that for a week I loved it so much and I hand blended it as it calls for cream of chicken and I did not want chicken chunks.

Sorry Dana...LOL...hand blending is not like being addicted to illegal drugs...I was able to stop after two weeks of doing it....LOL

:P

I've had lots of tomato soup, some brands of which have the occasional tomato lumps. When I come across one I chew it to smithereens!

The broccoli soup I've been buying is just creamy, no broccoli lumps.

I'm addicted to tomato soup! It is the best!

I LOVE tomato soup too! I had that the first day (yesterday) I was allowed full liquids :))

you know, I'd like to know, from a medical or biological perspective, what the difference is between consuming a creamy soup, and a blended soup... if the consistency is just the same, why does it matter? How can pureed food stretch the band? Does it have to do with the digestion of these foods-- or is it the passing of the food through the stomach? To me it makes absolutely no sense why we even distinguish clear/full/creamy liquids... They're not solids. What's the difference.

I'm also on day 6 and I'm starving and sick of broth, so this could be why I'm questioning things.

I might email the doc and ask him, but any thoughts you guys have would be great.

I began creamy soups at Day 5...I could not take the hunger anymore.

if you do get a soup that is chunky, blend it...you are better off blending things in the short term than eating chunks...it is a chunky world out there! (no pun intended)

Dr. Miranda will okay creamy soups around Day 5-6 if you are just dying.

You're so funny! I too blended foods, but was able to stop once my liquid diet was over. It didn't lead to more blending for me. That seems like a silly reason to ban blending. We are adults and can handle the rules.
