Getting Banded the Day after Christmas!

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

Just wondering who might also be crazy enough to be heading to Mexico to get lap band surgery over the Christmas holiday.

It seemed to be the only time that would work with my shcedule, but I am hoping that the holiday parties and eating will not keep me from

loosing my pre-op weight.

It is going to be awfully hard to stick to protein shakes while all around me everyone is pigging out!

I am praying that this tool will be the answer for me and so far have heard very mixed results.....I want to do everything right

and have a chance to regain my health and self-respect.

Thanks for all the info and help so far by reading the posts

Hi Rhonda,

There is really no best time to have the surgery except YOUR time. True you are doing during the holiday season but so what. IF you are really serious with your weight loss, you will do everything in your power to get this done AND I congrats to your decision to get this done as soon are YOU can. Like Mona says, what a great Christmas gift you are giving yourself...a brang new body!!! You are your band are going for an adventure ride of your life! WTG Rhonda!!

Keep a journal hun...this would help you stay on tract. I keep one and write in it EVERY day to stay focus. I write down everything I eat and at the end of the day, tally up my calories (there are no calorie counting the first 21 days post op), mark off my water intake, review my small reachable goals and rewrite them as I acheive them (like I just lost pants size from 24 to a comfy 20 or a tight 18!!! YAY!), write down my feelings for the day, and then the exercises I've one. All this is towards your road to success.

STAY FOCUS and IF you can be hard and strict on yourslef, go ahead and have a SMALL 'sample' taste of the holiday foods...it won't hurt you but just know when to stop. If you can, then don't do it. I had my surgery on Oct 8 and with Halloween a few weeks away, I just focused on my menu of food and measured out my portion control and stayed with the guidelines of eating. I can dicipline myself because I put forth a lot of money for this band to work with me...so I act accordingly.

Remember, the band is a tool to help you lose weight. You still have to do the work but that is the fun of it really! YOU have the control and YOU decide what is best for you and your band...no one can tell YOU what to do. Now that is cool, eh? You said you have a chance to regain your health and self-respect? THIS IS IT and YOU CAN DO IT! Come to this forum for any help if you need it...we can help support you...

Good Luck Rhonda and Congrats on your decision!

Rhonda,

You are absolutely making the best decision in your life. I just wanted to share how I felt Thanksgiving Day. I don't know about you, but EVERY Holiday being obese it has been about the food. How much I can bake, and prepare. Then, once it is made, it turns into, how much can I stuff myself (like the Turkey). This year, I finally got sick of myself. I had ENOUGH!! So, I booked my surgery. This Thanksgiving was the first time EVER in my life that I didn't have the guilt of "OMG, what did I just EAT?" I didn't feel like I had to un do my pants or take a nap after lunch. I had a little dab of this, and a little dab of that and I was satisfied. My band has become my best friend now & I DO NOT want to live without. Therefore, I am living my life by the book and taking care of it like I would a baby! I know now, that I will never dread the Holidays like I did before. I hated what happened to me after them, I would gain another 10 lbs!

Be encouraged as you approach your surgery & know that every day is one step closer to your goal. Food should not be a comfort any longer! Know that we are all here to support you the best we can!

Thanks to everyone that responded! It is so great to have people cheering for you that don't even know you!

For some reason I do have a lot of fear.....I guess it is because of all the failed attempts at getting back to a normal weight.

I was pretty normal up until pregnancy and having the twins really put me up over the "no return" mark. But my oldest is now 17 and the twins a few days away from 13 so that means I have been in the middles 200's for all these years now......all those years of trying to get back to the mid 100's which is where I was up till my 30's when I had my kids.

It is interesting how all of us are a little different, some struggle with weight all there lives and to actually get down to a normal weight is completely new and exciting and then there are other like me that were once pretty close to normal weight and desperately want to get back there as we know how much better we feel. Not being able to achieve that no matter how many things we have tried is sooooo demoralizing......

I am just putting so much hope in this method/tool that I am also fearful of how terrible is will be if it is not able to work for me. I have a very healthy digestive system and have never had any problems except for the odd heartburn when I eat too much of the wrong foods. When I hear all the horror stories of the pain and reflux and vomitting I wonder if I will really be sorry for doing something so drastic.

Can anyone speak to these fears in a real way and assure me that maybe I am being too paranoid? Or is it really luck of the draw how it turns out for each person.

Thanks again for all the support........I really had a good laugh at the new Christmas song I will be singing!!

( all I want for Christmas is my new lap-band, my new lapband......

Cheers!

These horror stories sound more like they are for gastric bypass. There really aren't many for lap band???? I don't have pain and didn't have any after the surgery either. Never took a single pain pill. Vomitting is extremely rare unless you are talking about the pb'ing and that can be avoided by simply following the rules. I don't think I have ever heard a single person say they were sorry for being banded, nor would I call it a drastic solution. I would however, call gastric bypass drastic, andpainful and very serious with lots of complaints and problems.

Read this site as much as you can, and your fears will quickly be put to rest.

Rhondasue,

I made the call to OCC in July. I weighed 365. I was banded on Aug. 14 and weighed about 330. This morning I weighed 273 and I don't feel like I have really been hungry. Yes, there have been times when I wanted to eat what I wasn't supposed to, but that wasn't hunger, just the old habits creeping back up on me. I haven't been sick at all, no gas pains, pb's, throwing up or anything. I realize that I have been very fortunate, but many have had the same experiences just as many have had bad experiences. I really feel that this is working great for me, but there has to be some lifesyle modifications with the band. It does not keep me from eating too much, it doesn't make me put less on my plate, but reminds me that it is time to stop. I feel like if you go into this with the right attitude, you will get the right results. With the wrong attitude and it is probably miserable.

Yunno, I read about you great success and weight loss so far.....it truly is amazing how well this does work for some. I am very positive each time I go into a new weight loss attempt and everything does work "for a time" I guess the key here is that you cannot really go all the way back to the old eating life as the band is there to stop you is that right? I'm in the medical world and do understand what is going to take place very well, I am healthy and should not have any complications......I just want it sooooo bad......thanks for great humor and the encouragement.....and by the way congrats on you own wonderful success with the band.

Thanks for the reassurance Ramona, I have been trying to glean as much info as I can from the posts. It is nice that most people do go into great detail about their experience. It is sooooo useful to us that haven't started yet. I guess I have been getting a little negative reaction from the few people I have shared this with....as in the comments in reagard to "why surgery?" I am glad to hear that you don't feel that this is too dangerous or drastic in any way. I do understand what will be done and it does seem simple, so I am not anticipating any horror stories for myself even though there are plenty of them if you go off this site into the cyber world in general. Thanks again for the positive feedback.

Alot of people that I hear that are having "bad luck" just do ALL the wrong things. This forum is so valuable. I have learned what to stay away from, how to eat, how to listen to my band. etc. I think if you apply everything you learn here & follow healthy band rules you will be successful. If you don't, you won't. For most, it is their choice. I have a feeling you will be amongst those successful people.

Look forward to hearing of your success Rhonda!
