Hooray for Habitant pea soup!

Recommended Posts

I don't know if they sell it in The States because it's a French-Canadian soup, but I have re-discovered a childhood favorite! I LOVE Habitant pea soup- the one in the yellow can that's been around forever. It's high in protein too, 8g protein, 7 g fibre, 4 g fat and 170 cals per serving.

Really? No soups ever??? That's like saying no water either cause it goes straight through your band. That's the first I've heard of that. I don't plan to eat only soup all the time, but for lunch sometimes? I eat solids most of the time but I like soup:(

oops....remember, no soups or mushies once you are on solids...they go right through the band. :(

Well, because water doesn't have calories and your not drinking it with food, then its ok. The function of the band is to restrict solids only. If you eat soup its going straight through the band and its wasted calories that do nothing to tell your brain that you are full, which is the reason for the band. I wound't say, no soup, ever, but remember, this is not using the band to its full capacity. The same thing with protein shakes. Dr. Ortiz told me, once on solids stay away from ANY liquids that contain calories or your wasting the calories.

I look at eating soup no differently than drinking liquids while eating. It liquifies the food and through the band it goes.

There is nothing wrong with soups. Just limit your portions. DON'T eat 2 bowls at one time and full of crackers (thats what I used to do-hehe) There are some days that is what I want, so I eat it. I make sure it has lots of protein like the buffalo chicken soup recipe. Find a dish with your serving amount and stick with that dish and amount per serving each time. AND remember Dr. Ortiz says, 1/3 of what you used to eat. So, DON'T deprive your self. Slow weight loss is the best!

ALSO....I do get full on soups, and other liquids. I am sure most all of us do, once we have a fill. So, stop when you are full.

I see what you're saying but my brain is actually registering a full feeling with this soup, and I stay full as long (if not longer) than I do when I eat solids, maybe because it's high in protein? Man, my head is spinning. I better talk to OCC about this, who knows how many other things I'm doing wrong?!

Soup is ok to have...I have it as my main 'meal', especially during this cold season. Like Dana says, watch your portion. Yes, my Buffalo Checken soup recipe is what I have the most of in fact! I have this all the time! As i've mentioned before, it's a mind over matter thing and really, as long as my tummy is full of warm food/liquid, I am doing fine. Just make sure you get the proteins in for the day.

Its funny because it seems we all get a little different version of instructions.

But when it comes down to it, it's REALLY what works for each of us! I'm sure there are things that I do that some of you (even me) we told not to do, but for me and my body it works best.

So enjoy your soup if it works. For me, I feel like I drank water after I eat soup and I'm still hungry.

We are all sooooo very different!

That's true CindyLou. Let me clarify too that the soups I normally have in my solid stage are hearty, thickened soups, not just broth. I have chicken and veggies in my soups. I haven't have broth since my first week of post op.

I have soups. Sabrina... you also don't have any restriction right now, so EVERYTHING is going through your band until you get at least your first fill, if not additional fills. If it fills you up, eat away in controlled portions! Uhm, maybe I should send you money and have you ship me some of that yummy soup!

If I get my first fill around the same time as you (I'm holiding out for a seat sale) I'll bring you some!

Sabrina:)

Sorry for the downer reply however we are supposed to avoid liquid food and soup is one of them along with protein shakes and other liquid foods. I’m guilty of having both of these as well, but I limit intake of soups, I have a hard time limiting my protein shakes, in the AM I’m pretty tight and need the extra protein and vitamins to stay focused for work. (Its not what I’m suppose to do…...)

And if you’re in question of something email or call the OCC– whenever I questioned something and found many different answers I just went straight to the source.

One doc I use is the Patients Guide to Living with the Lap Band System – it was created by INAMED the manufacture of lap bands and I just use it as a guideline – Dr. Ortiz’s recommendations always come first.
