THANK YOUPassports are not required until June 2009, so you are safe to use just your DL and birth certificate. BUT, if and when you are going back to OCC for your fills, it will be required of you to have your passport. So, be prepare and get it now, while the rate is low. I've purchased mine 2 years ago, as I travel, and that is the only item I use at the border custom.

CindyLou
Remember it can take up to 12 weeks or longer to get it back! So, if anyone anticipates needing to go after june, now is the time to get the application in!
Cujo
When the passport requirement kicked in for Canadians flying to the states, our passport office was insanely backed-up. The same thing will happen down there. Get yours now before the rush.

Amanda2008
Both times I came back through with my driver's license and social security card. I have NO idea where my birth certificate is. Today (I had a fill yesterday) I also brought a copy of my passport, which is expired (I couldn't find the passport either, but I had a paper copy! hah!). Today it took the guy like 5 minutes to let me through, but he did! Definitely get a passport - I am going to get mine renewed asap.
