Cliff
Hi, I have been considering getting banded for quite sometime now, and my main concern is the possibility of having large amounts of excess skin hanging after I lose the weight. I'm 24 years old, 5'9" and weigh 350lbs. I have heard that it depends on your size and the elasticity of your skin, but I was wondering if there is anyone on here that has had issues with this, if it is to be expected or if it is only circumstancial. If it's not a definite thing, is there anyway you can work your body into looking normal after such drastic weight loss? Please help! Thank you! This is a question I asked also and was told that many factors determine if you will have saggy skin, age, skin elasticity, genetics, how fast you lose, how much you exercise and others they can't account for. The measure I was given was if you have saggy skin once you lose 50% of your target weight you probably will have it when you lose it all. If not your chances increase of not having unsightly excess skin. Best wishes Kevin

However, my attitude has been that it is more important to lose the weight than worrying about the excess skin issue. I know after losing my weight, I will both look and feel better, and be healthier. And, should excess skin be an issue for me, plastic surgery is widely available, and the results are amazing. Watch the plastic surgery show on Discovery Health Channel to see before and after results. But for me, weight loss first, vanity later. Littleroo27
Consider that no matter how you lose the weight, you will likely have about the same amount of baggy skin. You may have less if you lose slower, but it's not worth it for your health. I'm 5'4" and around 320lbs right now. I know I will have tons of baggy skin when I'm all done, but I'd rather deal with it and the reconstructive surgeries then die 20 years earlier and feel unhealthy the whole time I'm on this earth. Health is the issue to be concerned with first and foremost. When I talked to Dr. Martinez he said they had done lapband surgery on teens and had found that it didn't matter if you were younger in how much excess skin you will have when they obtained their healthy goal weight. Some of the teens had more and some had less just because they were young it didn't just snap back into place once the fat was removed from below it. Thought that was interesting as my preconception was that the younger you are the better chance you have of not having excess skin after dramatic weight loss.. I'm with you do it for yourself and your health and a long enjoyable life. Kevin
